I'm with the OP on this. I've noticed the same things. Anyone got a link to proper flag flying etiquette? It should be taken down in rain and all that, no?

What about mounting a light to shine on the flag during night or just taking it down each night?

who cares what people think? put whatever flag up, however you want it up. if they dont like it, they can go cut themselfs.

If anyone ever tells me something like that, they are getting a big laugh and a big GTFO of my face.

If youre so patriotic, go to bestbuy and stop the fucking stealing going on(bestbuy stealing from us). that would be a nice start. but to bitch at ME? then youre just trippin

Is this an American thing or what?

I've noticed the vast amount of national flags ever since I step foot in this country. And no other countries that I've been to spend this amount of time on their flags.

Kind of a waste of time IMO.

Sort of. Usually the people that actually care about things like this are those who have served or have had close relatives serve in the military, or was in the boy scouts as a youth.

But a lot of people really don't spend time thinking about the flag and similar things.

Personally, I really don't think about it, and I certainly don't spend my time worrying about what other people are doing with the flag.

At first I thought this was going to be a giant tirade against my personal pet peeve, people who don't wash their hands when they come out of the friggin' bathroom. Nobody wants to touch your dick hands, you scumbags. images/smilies/shakefist.gif But this works too.

Some didn't even realize they needed to be retired, or were reluctant to have them burned, thinking it was unpatriotic.

I think it would be better if you also offered a solution to the problem in your website.
My Scout troop did something similar, but instead of burning it they cut it up with scissors and buried it with a ceremony. I don't know if it's right or not, however.

And I don't see why the British are so apparently against mild forms of patriotism. Have the BNP and the skinheads given a bad name to flag-waving, or have we after 9/11? There's no harm in patriotism in small doses: a tasteful flag here or there to serve as a reminder to where this country came from and where it's going (or to remind people what damn country they've stumbled upon, heh heh). It's not fucking fascism, I don't know where all these Nazi comparisons are coming from. Respect your country, dammit!...we may overdo it too much sometimes (every time I see a bald eagle in front of a flag backdrop the baby Jesus in me sheds a lone, solitary tear like the Native American man) but it's still better than pretending we don't exist.

Great idea, Scott.
Agreed. My american flag holds a place of pride in my room. It's right on my wall, above my Ferrari flag. I don't think there's anything jingoistic about flying the flag. It's just an expression of how much I love my country.

I think you misunderstand my intent here. I am not running around TELLING people what to do, I am simply informing them that they flag they are flying has a problem and I bring their attention to it in case they have overlooked it. 9 times out of 10 it is met with a quick apology and a positive action (replacing the flag or taking it down until they can buy a new one). I also have only ever done this to ONE private citizen at their house, and that was after seeing it for WEEKS in the same sad state. Every other time has been at a business.

So if you were back in Brazil and someone was flying a Brazilian flag that was just ripped to shreds and clearly not cared for at all, you would not care about it? That would not make you feel anything at all?? It is your national flag for pete sake! it is the thing you crazy people run around waving when your football team kicks people's asses, how can you not be proud enough of it to want your fellow citizens to respect and care for it?

Damn, I thought I might have finally found someone who hates dessert forks as much as I do ahh well.

Ohhh and I really like how Americans are the odd ones for flying their flag out of national pride and respect; as opposed to flying it to cheer on a bunch bad actors kicking around a cow stomach and so you can tell sides during the post game riot. Yeah, we're strange.

In reality, if anyone came to my door patronising me about how to fly the flag, I would close the door in their face. It's all needlessly sanctimonious. Anyone who thinks it's a given right to tell people how to live their life is pompous and should be treated as such.

If my football team kicks ass, good for them, but will I be proud? No, I wasnt even playing, I have no part in it, not to mention I HATE soccer. I do love Rubens though and probably wouldnt if he was from anywhere else. (hate massa images/smilies/lol.gif ). Im not the kind of person that cares for stuff like that. I care for what matters. I think a worn to shit flag looks better than a new one too, but thats due to my fucked up taste that enjoys old/beat looking things.

If I saw a guy burning a Brazilian flag, Id just wonder why hes so pissed. I think fbc is right, its none of my business what people do with their flags. not to mention I got way better shit to worry about. Im not going to waste my life bitching at what others do. so go ahead and shit on a flag lol. whatever makes you happy.

I think some Europeans, who have basically lost their sovereignty to the evil EU, have not grown up with any sense of nationalism. Any "new" country like the U.S. tends to be more patriotic and nationalistic.

Flags don't hold any meaning to me. Nationalism breeds hate and then violence, it's been proven again and again. A flag is just a sheet of cloth with a design printed on it to me.

^^ cvrefugee Not quite that, but EU = Expensive if you are Swedish, British or German (everyone else is on a giant gravy train) yep! In our case the waving of flags that are not on public buildings, or at a very special occasion is sort of frowned upon as it is a device used by neo Nazi parties to try to appeal to the nationalistic element in citizens of GB. Oh and the other place where there are lots of flags in N.Ireland.
