Patriotism just doesn't always work like that outside of america. People don't always feel the need to put up big displays to gain a fake sense of achievement or attachment to something.

I love my country, I think it's the greatest country on Earth, but I don't feel the need to raise a bloody flag just to feel attached to it or just to prove to other people that I love my country. By not raising a flag outside my house, I don't feel I'm any less patriotic than you. So what if I don't hang a SA flag outside my house, does that make me a loser for not taking pride in my country?

Actualy, I'm gonna be honest and tell you how I think about all this overboard flag crap I'm seeing.

Mugs/cups with USA flags, stationery holders with a mini flag, flags on cars, cabs, bus etc. Big flags outside your house, small flags inside your house, bumper stickers, computer cases... etc STOP. It's becoming a marketing campaign. Because marketing companies know, by putting a flag on any of their products, it will sell by millions, you really think they give a fuck about the country in the first place?

It loses the purpose and the significance of a flag. Stop that shit, its becoming like a bloody TV advert, and border line of fanboyism, enough.

And it's the extreme nationalists thats making this unbearable. I'm fine with most of the Americans that I've come across. But it's those rednecks thats making it incredibly annoying when they constantly remind you "Hey, I am American, look at me! I attach a flag on every fucking possible object I can find, I love my country, and your country sucks cos you don't show your love by having a flag"

As a good & normal citizen, You SHOULD love your country. But it gets incredibly annoying when you have 10 million American flags on every fucking thing you can get your hands on, just to advertised it to the rest of the world and to prove a point.

Good rant. I'm annoyed with that shit too myself, it tarnishes the flag when it's screenprinted on some tacky mug with a crying bald eagle in front of it underneath the gold "HECHO EN CHINA" sticker. But that's the ills of capitalism, I guess. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I don't believe your average citizen should be blamed for the commercialization of the American flag.

I can't even say that displaying the flag is all about patriotism either. I'm not "patriotic"...i'm not even American, and I sported a US flag keychain not too long ago. I just liked it. But that's besides the point.

Scott is a soldier, so I can understand why the flag is probably more important to him than it is to me. There's nothing wrong with telling someone that their flag is displayed improperly. For most the flag is symbolic and represents something (a history lesson is not necessary here), and for that is should be shown a certain level of respect.

So I say go ahead and educate these people on flag etiquette. Just don't be a dick about it images/smilies/tongue.gif

Australians are fiercly patriotic but not many display flags at their house (lots of shirts and things like that though)

Dont mind if people like to fly a flag on a flagpole, thats their business. What I hate are those who buy those car flags for Australia day. I dont think you need a flag to feel proud of your country though.

I love my country - there's a LOT of shit going on in Britain but there's also a LOT of good stuff to be proud of as well.

I love the fact that I'm British and the British way of life - I love British music, television and culture but I don't love the overly authoritatian nature of our current Government, I don't like the increasing crime rate and dissafected youth/chav culture.

I also don't feel the need to display a flag or any outward show of patriotism because I know myself that I love being British and thats enough for me - I don't need anyone else to know it.

In fact I think this is probably the first time I've written the words "I love being British" on a public forum but it's not a new thing - I always have.

It's just different approaches for different cultures.

And I can see why you would want the flag to look good as it's an icon of your country.

Also - we have some screwy rules in the UK - for example you're not supposed to (it used to be and might still be illegal) deface something with the Queen's head on it - so stamps, notes, coins etc...
