Default State Control of Religion in Canada...

Quote:
Canadian National Public Radio Broadcasts Call for State Control of Religion, Especially Catholicism

OTTAWA, July 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Just as Senate approaches the final vote on the gay 'marriage' bill, C-38, Canada's national public radio CBC Radio has aired a commentary by a retired professor from the Royal Military College calling for state control over religion, specifically Catholicism. While parliamentarians dismissed warnings by numerous religious leaders and experts that such laws would lead to religious persecution, former professor Bob Ferguson has called for "legislation to regulate the practice of religion."

"Given the inertia of the Catholic Church, perhaps we could encourage reform by changing the environment in which all religions operate," Ferguson began his commentary in measured tones yesterday. "Couldn't we insist that human rights, employment and consumer legislation apply to them as it does other organizations? Then it would be illegal to require a particular marital status as a condition of employment or to exclude women from the priesthood. "

Ferguson continued, "Of course the Vatican wouldn't like the changes, but they would come to accept them in time as a fact of life in Canada. Indeed I suspect many clergy would welcome the external pressure."

Wow, just wow. This is secularism at its worst.

Wouldn't happen, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms blocks that.

I don't think any government, whether it's Liberal or Tory controlled, is going to try and impose their will on religious groups. That's evident by the stipulation in the Gay Marriage Bill that states no clergy will be forced to act against their beliefs and wed two people of the same sex.

How valid is this link? I've not heard of this at all, and I'm Canadian myself.

Though I do agree with you, church and state are two very seperate things.

Being Canadian, I assume that he wants to have state regulation of religious institutions just so the state can tax them.

Someone find a radioclip of a redneck racist that wants all the blacks, jews, and mexicans out of America.

Seriously, you don't like it when people judge christians based on the actions of a few, don't fucking say Canada is going to change it's policy because one man comes on the radio and says we should do it. I wish it was that easy, we'd have marijuana legal by now.

What's exactly the point of this topic?

I'm sure there are professors in America that share the same ideas as this man.

His aggression aside, he does have a point. This has absolutely no merit whatsoever... just some old bloke who let his mouth run. We don't even know what institute he is from... maybe he just has one of those "Sex Doctor" shirts or something.

The title of the article is false....the radio station itself did not call for anything of the sort.

This segment is called "Commentary".....this is from the website
