Default The Seal Hunt

Hi, I'm from Newfoundland and it's about that time of year again, and just like every year, a celebrity has come to the Island to get some publicty by taking a picture with a baby seal and protesting the seal hunt. Last year it was Richard Dean Anderson (Mcgyver) and I believe one year Martin Sheen was here. But this year trumps them all.

Paul McCartney has got it in his head now that he should try and ruin the lively hood of thousands of Newfoundlanders. He says "We have complete faith that Prime Minister Harper will take swift and decisive action to end the slaughter of these defenceless seal pups for good."

I hate this every year. The Seal Hunt has been going on for centuries, ever since the damn place was first settled. The seal population is stable, it's even been increaseing since the 1970's when restrictions were placed on the hunt.

But the biggest thing I really want to say is that SEALS ARE NOT CUTE CUDDLY CREATURES LIKE THE CELEBS MAKE THEM OUT TO BE!!!

A seal would tear your head off. I've been around them. I hate these people who come here and get someone to find the smallest yougest seal they can find to get a picture for the magazines. It's illegal to kill seals under a certain age. I'd like for Sir McCartney to try and get a picture with a grown seal. I wish people would **** off about it.

Anyway, our Premiere Danny Williams will be on CNN tomorrow night to argue with McCartney and hope he tears him a new one.

Here's a lnk to CBC news:

wow, I didn't know there was a traditional seal hunt...anywhere.

Anyways, celebs like McCartney are all the same. You pay them enough money to say what it is that you want them to say, and they'll act as though it's the most important thing in the world, and everyone who base their lives around celebs and television will follow their word. And thus it shall remain untill someone pays the celeb to forget...

If the population is stable or better yet increasing then there shouldn't be a big problem. Don't foget these are the types of people who would probably protest hunting deer, duck rabbit and other plentiful(even overpopulated) species.

Me, I'm against hunting of any sort that isn't done for survival - regardless of whether the animal is cute & cuddly or would rip your head off.

Wait, where did he get the baby seal? Did they just steal one from its mother or something? images/smilies/lol.gif

I'm not really for or against the whole seal hunting thing. What i am very much against is that some people think it's wrong just because the animal is cute. If it's some ugly or boring animal that gets killed nobody gives a f***. Same thing with killing and hunger in Africa.

Whereas a deer, wolf, bear, lamb, cow, chicken etc. etc. is perfectly capable of defending itself against an armed "hunter"??

I can understand that point of view, it's just the media and thses celebrities always show cute little pups to sway the puplic in thier favour. Show a fat ugly grown seal on the cover of a newspaper and no one would give a shit.

Taking the pic that Kip_6666 posted in the 'Random Pictar Thread' I whipped this up in a matter of seconds. Enjoy.

In order to justify that point of view I think you'd need to be a vegan.

I'm all for hunting as long as it's policed and the hunting done is sustainable. I've done fox and kangaroo hunting and it's a great outdoors activity... the roo's also provide you with the best dinner you'll ever have images/smilies/biggrin.gif

NB: For the non-Australians, Kangaroos are at plague proportions in our country and to hunt them you need a permit or be attached to a group with a group permit. I did it on a farm in NSW where the roo's were completely destroying the crops and thus, the farmers living standard.

And BTW, Kangaroo steak tastes better than any meat you'll have ever eaten, I guarantee it!

I wonder if each race has a different taste. This may sound weird, but I bet Asians taste the best.

I don't suppose anyone watched Larry King Live tonight? Paul and Heather McCartney versus the Premiere Danny Williams. (Larry King kept saying the Premiere of Newfinland, which makes me want to hit him)

After seeing it I can honestly say that I want to choke Heather Mills. And it also seems she wears the pants and Paul is just kinda doing what she says. (Sorry to all the Beatle fans).

I was kind of impartial toward the hunt before, you know, I wouldn't take part, but it's something I believe people should be able to do. Now I'm all for it, hell, I want to go club some baby seals myself just to make those hippy's angry.

Fair call - and no I'm far from a vegan. When I said hunting I meant hunting for sport or for economic gain. If it's a controlled cull because the animal population is a problem that's a bit different too.

Yes I suppose that's somewhat hypocritical - but at least I'm not afraid to admit it (and no I can't really defend it)
