Muslims outraged at police advert featuring cute puppy sitting in policeman's hat

A postcard featuring a cute puppy sitting in a policeman's hat advertising a Scottish police force's new telephone number has sparked outrage from Muslims.

Tayside Police's new non-emergency phone number has prompted complaints from members of the Islamic community.

The choice of image on the Tayside Police cards - a black dog sitting in a police officer's hat - has now been raised with Chief Constable John Vine.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/07/01/article-1030798-01CF01ED00000578-898_468x338.jpg

The advert has upset Muslims because dogs are considered ritually unclean and has sparked such anger that some shopkeepers in Dundee have refused to display the advert.

Dundee councillor Mohammed Asif said: 'My concern was that it's not welcomed by all communities, with the dog on the cards.

'It was probably a waste of resources going to these communities.

'They (the police) should have understood. Since then, the police have explained that it was an oversight on their part, and that if they'd seen it was going to cause upset they wouldn't have done it.'

Councillor Asif, who is a member of the Tayside Joint Police Board, said that the force had a diversity adviser and was generally very aware of such issues.

He raised the matter with Mr Vine at a meeting of the board.

The chief constable said he was unaware of the concerns and that the force had not sought to cause any upset but added he would look into the matter.

Councillor Asif said: 'People who have shops just won't put up the postcard. But the police have said to me that it was simply an oversight and they did not seek to offend or upset.'

Cards featuring police dog-in-training Rebel have been distributed to communities throughout the area to advertise the single number point of contact for non-emergency calls to the police.

Rebel has proved a popular recruit for Tayside Police after coming through the very first Lothian and Borders Police dog-breeding programme in February.

One of seven German Shepherd pups born in early December, he has now completed his course of inoculations, and is free to venture out onto the streets of Tayside.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: 'Trainee police dog Rebel has proved extremely popular with children and adults since being introduced to the public, aged six weeks old, as Tayside Police's newest canine recruit.

'His incredible world-wide popularity - he has attracted record visitor numbers to our website - led us to believe Rebel could play a starring role in the promotion of our non-emergency number.

'We did not seek advice from the force's diversity adviser prior to publishing and distributing the postcards. That was an oversight and we apologise for any offence caused.'
I'm all for the embracing of diversity and other cultures, but if you are an immigrant to a new culture I think that it's unreasonable to expect the host nation to change their entire existence to not piss you off. You don't like it? Don't live there! It's a choice, you made it, deal with it.

When will people realize they don't have a right to never be offended?

You cannot state that, because that may offend someone. We cannot upset people of the Islam faith, because they make up less than 5% of the population, therefore outweighing the other 95%. But, we have to make sure the NEA funds people who take a caricature of Jesus Christ, smears feces all over it, and call it art.
Also, you cannot say embracing, because that may be a form of sexual harassment.
Also, saying the word "piss" might offend the urine challenged.
Also, you cannot use exclamation marks, because that may offend people who like quiet sentences.
Also, you cannot use the word "culture", as it may offend the uncultured, as determined and defined by elitist, leftist snobs like me.
Also, your avatar wording is offensive to pacifists.
Also, your avatar is offensive to people who cannot grow facial hair.
Also, your username is offensive to the blind. And Greeks.
Also, your signature is implying that you use a motorized vehicle, which is offensive to environmentalists, AlGore, the messiah Barack Obama, and Earth.

Funny that even in Islamic text the place of dogs is mixed, and they all come from the Hadith (Stories of the Prophet) not the Quran (the Holy text sent by God and has more value over Hadith). Its a debatable subject as to weather its ok to place a photo of a dog or own one. I grew up with Dogs as a child when we lived out of San Francisco.

But my more interesting comment on this is, why do all these stories seem to come out of the UK and not the states... I just wonder.

I'm sorry if you don't like it, I was just posting what I found in my random surfing around the 'net. I don't know much about the UK papers, but the standards of journalism seem to be dropping all over the US too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: religion is bullcrap and leads to dumb stories like this one. You don't like the puppy being on the card? Fine, throw the card out and stfu, no one is forcing you to frame it and keep it next to your bed.
Next week on the news: athiest sues christian man for wearing a crucifix around his neck - its offensive.

HA! What a farce. I agree with Blind_Io, sure, the fact thats dogs are habitually unclean may be a part of their beliefs, and I respect that, but this ad isn't going to be shown in a place where their beliefs rule. It's an ad for a Scottish Police force and that dog is damn cute, so why the hate??

Oh good grief, my home town images/smilies/sad.gif

Little wonder my parents are desperate to leave and i am completely with your sentiments 100% - as are my parents. Expats living and moving to the Middle East must abide by local laws and customs without expecting government to change things just to suit them.

If things there DO change it is usually voluntarily done by goverments to lure people in to work, or hold onto them not because complaints have been raised that "I can't eat pork, it's against my human rights" or similar such BS. Rules/Laws are in place long before we move and settle so each time i have moved i've looked at such detail and seen if there are complications. Okay so there's nothing excessively devisive but i have had to adjust my own living style from time to time to stay within strange local laws or customs.

Don't see why it shouldn't be a two way street.

This may be the most succinct and rational counter-argument for these people I've yet heard.

ATTENTION IMMIGRANTS: If you don't like something about a country, instead of bitching and moaning and trying to force the native population to change to accommodate some silly tradition.
