it hasn't hit 1 trillion, and in reality it's far from it. some people are just saying it could get that expensive.

It's not real money. It's money we're borrowing against our grandchildren and from countries where we'll never have to pay it back. images/smilies/lol.gif

Imagine how much better our country would be if the administration invested $1 trillion into something INSIDE our borders.

^Hehe, good point.

One trillion in research and development of alternative energi sources, fusion power, hydrogen powered stuff etc. vs. one trillion for a pretty messy country with oil.

Nice choice

nope. we have more than enough oil reserves to power us into the future, and we even export oil. we just want to use the arab oil all up first.

It's bigger than oil. It's the entire military-industrial complex

well duh, heheh. It's a number of factors, but one of the reasons for us importing so much oil is so that we use foreign reserves up, then we can export our massive(and they are) reserves for hella money. The military-industrial complex wants any reason it can find to develop new technology and weapons, not because they like killing people or making weapons, but because they can get the government to give them billions of dollars. We don't need "state of the art, next generation" shit to help fight some crazy losers who can't shoot straight in the first place, but try telling someone involved, "hey, we really don't need this new weapon system, we're doing good right now and if we just spent more money on training, intelligence and body armour I think we'd be ok, this new toy is kinda superfluous" and see where it gets you.

lol...Yeah, of course. I just find that much of the anti-war movement (and others) harp on the oil factor, when the other is a much larger component (in terms of money and motivation).

And yeah, we do have a lot of oil domestically (not to mention our concentration of oil shale). Although I never really thought of it in terms of using up foreign reserves then exporting our own, that's just too sinister for me to think of.

sinister to you and I, maybe, but it makes great business sense. Another problem is that ecomentalists and other groups stop us from really reaching all our possible reserves. There is so much untapped oil under US soil that is protected by various environmental concerns it's staggering. With oil reserves depleated overseas, there's now an excuse to bypass the ecomentalists and start extracting, and then exporting it at huge profit.

ecomentalists are also a big part of what's stopping us from using nulcear power, because they don't know WTF they are talking about.
