Oh, I forgot the "pussies" part. Well, I personally would have left it out of the discussion and don't see it as relevant but I could see an argument for both sides. While the crew really do put themselves in danger against the elements thanks to an incompetent skipper and an inadedquate ship, some might call that foolhardy rather than brave. And attacking sailors who refuse to defend themselves is not exactly the height of bravery, in fact that doesn't help your argument. Watson constantly saying things like, "what's Japanese for coward?" and heckling them for "running", pretending to goad the whalers into some kind of battle when he knows they won't fight back is pretty cowardly in my book.

FYI, the Australian envoy to the IWC is paid nearly $2,000/day.

It would be different, if whales were simply needed as food supply for starving people or if they'd produce some rare medication for fatal diseases. But that's not the case.

Whales are hunted down, because in certain cultures they are another variation on already cluttered menus.

In my eyes it is not justifiable to hunt down (and maybe wipe out) a species that cannot be farmed, just because the eating habits of certain cultures includes their meat as a speciality or delicacy.

In my opinion it can be expected and even required from people to change their eating habits or even parts of their culture in order to protect the wildlife. To hell with traditions and folklore, when more important things are at stake.

It's as easy as that.

Thing is, the whales that are hunted isn't in danger of perishing. At least not in the Atlantic, I can't speak for the Pacific.

Whale is healthy, good meat. One might look at whale as the bison of the sea, but it isn't. There still enough whale for some hunting, all of Europe living of whale meat, that would on the other hand be something different.

The bison probably isn't the best example for your point. images/smilies/wink.gif

It is, as it isn't the same. The bison was hunted till it perished at several thousands a day, the level of hunting is not comparable.

That was my point. images/smilies/smile.gif
