Default World Trade Center 2.0

Since no one can agree about what to put on the former site of the World Trade Center, I think this proposal has the most going for it. Rebuild the towers on new ground, making the old foot-prints memorials.

http://www.wtc2011.com/home.html

Photos are flash-based, so clicky the above link to see the renderings.

Quote:
The World Trade Center presented here is a bridge between the future and the past, instead of a radical break. The Twin Towers II Plan was created to provide the continuity that fosters healing. By improving on the original design, it offers renewal and inspiration, instead of irrelevance. And the stirring memorial, which focuses attention up, rather than down, has the distinction of being preferred by many 9/11 families and the general public, at a fraction of what the current design is projected to cost.

Using the original blueprints, the plan's creators re-engineered the design to recapture the Towers' greatness, while diligently addressing their flaws. As a result, the design incorporates robust security, construction economy, and the greenest technology. The retail space is inviting, the commercial space is exceptional, and the outdoor spaces are a pedestrian-friendly oasis.

What's more, this project could be realized in less time than the existing plan. It would be a good deal less costly to both build and maintain, saving hundreds of millions in construction costs and ultimately, in the cost of operation. Most existing contracts could be renegotiated to accommodate the change of course. And there is no doubt that the construction trades would rather rebuild the Twin Towers than any other plan.

The plans and models are available for viewing. Years of dedicated effort have gone into preparing for the day when the political climate would be ready to judge this plan on its merits. We are confident that it will stimulate the interest, and ultimately win the support, of those who hold the future of the World Trade Center in their hands, because it has no downside. This is what people have asked for from the beginning. It would be a colossal gain for all Americans and peace-loving people everywhere.
PDF of the site plan.

That sounds like a good plan. Nothing says fuck you like just rebuilding the same buildings.

Make them plane-proof and they'll really scream a big "F*** you terrorists" in those idiots' faces.

umm... maybe that whole ideology would work out if the terrorists decided to start the war on architecture back on 9/11

Should have gone equal distance, but underground. That would be far more impressive, and a huge engineering feat with the whole water table issue... and fire escapes.

But it could have its own subway station, not require any cooling during summer and little heating in winter.

I'd really love nothing more than to see the Twin Towers rebuilt, defining NYC's unmistakable skyline once more.

I think leaving the site as a memorial would be a neat idea myself, but one for the New Yorkers to decide IMHO.

You know what would really say "F*** YOU!" to the terrorists? Going after the people responsible for it! Probably wont happen though...

So it's going to say, "we'll pretend it never happened?" Is that the message that's going to be sent with this?

From an architectural standpoint, the Twin Towers were pretty ugly, anyway. I'm more interested in the Freedom Tower proposal that's already underway.

I don't think the attitude is to erase it from memory, most the grounds on the plan are devoted to the memorial.

I like this idea a lot. Building something entirely different would be like completely moving on and pretending it never happened. By rebuilding the towers everyone will easily be able to keep those memories alive. If I saw the towers standing again I would think back to that day every time I saw them. If something else was build I would think "Oh it's just another building, nothing special.".

Funny, we're both looking at it in exactly the opposite ways. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I think building a carbon copy would be bringing everything since Sept. 10th full-circle again. Why not build something that isn't dead-set stuck in 70s International-style architecture, something that's far more progressive and reflective of the new 21st century and its slowly-diminishing optimism?

For some reason, I have this image of the original towers but with hanging gardens from recessed balconies scattered all up and down the sides and around the top of the roof. The construction style of the original towers would be ideal for maintaining the seamless look of the exterior with plants hanging down between the struts from hidden patios and gardens.

I think that would be pretty damn cool, almost like a vertical park in the middle of lower Manhattan.

/Bonus: Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Tower of Babel all wrapped up in one. How's that for a big "Fuck you" to fundamentalists?

That plan would only work as a "Fuck you" to terrorists, if it weren't for the aliens that actually attacked the towers!

I like the idea of rebuilding them, but make it look more modern.
