I'd never admit that in public. Somehow that makes you a brave man.

So write the car off, buy a new car, move the mods etc (leather seat cover) over to the new car. Job done.
That would mean they would have to spend even more money to make this accident "go away". I have $10k left to pay off on my car, and a stock 2008 xD is apparently worth $15k (what the autobody shop said to my insurance). Might be able to get more since I did tasteful mods to my car instead of fugly mods every other Scion owner does, but still any mod will decrease the price since I modded the car to my taste. Either way, when I get my car back I'll go see what I can get for it at various places images/smilies/smile.gif

If I did get a new or used car it would have to be under $20k with everything said and done. HOWEVER, since I live in stupid fucking California, they've raised the taxes, license and registration fees for new cars. So in the end, it probably wouldn't be worth trying to get a new or used car. Even if I bought it out of state (which would be a fun trip), I'd still have to renew the car a year later and by then the fees might go up again.

We'll see... all depends on how I feel about my car when I get it back. Oh, and a new car would HAVE to be able to take my AVIC F700bt as I'm still paying it off and I images/smilies/love.gif that HU.

Good choice. I'm actually considering the exact same car too. The 2010 models are fugly as hell. 2009 is the model to get.

Need to find a manual though.

That's something I can't afford and choose not to own because of the maintenance costs images/smilies/tongue.gif

They aren't that expensive to maintain. Mine's only really expensive issue is the soft top and it wouldn't have one of those.

Actually... Now that I think about it is shockingly reliable. images/smilies/blink.gif I don't think I've had much go wrong that wasn't the top and the accident damage.... In 5 years just the seat belt buckle, a couple of 16$ light bulbs, a sensor, and a window motor which was under warranty. Other than that just regular oil changes and tire rotations,

Well, I decided to put my actual car in my profile, knowing it's not something to be proud of. Of course, I could have put something along the lines of: looking at used ferrari/maserati/lamborghini/mclaren/porsche. But I felt the truth was more appropriate. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I love VW's, but they have a long way to go to be on par with the Japanese or even the Americans in terms of reliability. North American VW's tend to be built in Mexico and they tend to be crap, for the most part. Expensive to buy, expensive to run, expensive to repair, and expensive to insure. There are a lot better choices to chose from and you don't have to pay extra for the badge.

Well here is the thing with the 2010 Golf:
*Built in Wolfsburg, Germany.
*Has an AMAZING interior that is soooooo much better than any other economy car.
*Is priced just $1000 more than a Civic (and about the same price as Mazda3).
*Is supposed to be the most reliable VW Golf ever.
*Comes in diesel with tax credit.
*Safest car EVER tested by EuroNCAP.

Japanese my be more reliable but american cars sure aren't. Here's a good example, PT Cruiser. My mother has one the same year as my mexican bug. The fog lights kept turning on by themselves so she had to have them disconnected but not before they ruined the battery. She also had to pull the overhead lights out because they wouldn't turn off. Then the suspension is totally shot and they have estimated thousands to repair. This car only has like 35k miles on it and it is a total POS. The oil light turns on and off randomly, and now the CEL is on and no one can figure out why because when they check the code it actually doesn't have a meaning. The moonroof got stuck like a year ago too. Those are the things wrong NOW not things that have been fixed in the past either.

The only thing that is wrong with my car is the power top, and that is the first year they made those convertibles so it's obviously going to be buggy. it still works well enough to go up and down by hand so I haven't even bothered getting it fixed.

I told her to by a golf, she is thinking about it. Probably since I spend so much time laughing at how broken her car is. Also add in the fact I am 19, and she is 50. I drive like a rally car driver. I have abused that poor little bug to hell it's amazing it is in one piece. I have thrown it into park when moving for gods sake.

I'm sure they say that every generation.

Chels, I'm sure you could wrangle a good deal on a last-gen certified GTI if you want a fun hatch...

My sister had an 2001 Jetta, that thing fell apart rather quickly and when it was time to replace the brakes, they had to replace the whole mechanism because.. of the sensors? Don't remember exactly, either way, it was rather pricey. Diesels? No thanks, especially not with California gas prices already at $2.70/gal here and not sure what California says about diesel cars..

TomCat made my point for me. I remember when the Beetle came out (forget the year) and I wanted it SO BADLY. Then I saw what Consumer Reports said about it.. completely changed my mind on the car. Maybe they're better now.. but still. German engineered cars, whether they're built in North American or Europe, are still pricey to maintain when compared to like Japanese cars. No way in hell would I be getting an American car, the possibility of a Mazda3 2009 hinges on if I can find what I want for a good price and if I'll get a good value for my car when I get it back.

Also, how much do you think a dealer will knock off on my car since it was involved in an accident? Supposedly KBB says its worth $15k for a retail value, but I know dealers never give you that much for it. So... yea. Hoping when I get my car back it'll have enough value (at LEAST $15k for my xD) to put towards a used Mazda3.

Eh.. a GTI... when those came out I wanted that as well, but I dunno. Not really a VW fan. O.o

I know what you mean, but there is actually logic to back the claim up this time, because the manufacturing process has been dramatically simplified.

Well, we all have our experiences then. I've had my PT for 5+ years and the only things I've had to replace on it are tires, oil, and just recently the spark plugs. My car has been flawless otherwise. It doesn't even squeak or rattle. And I don't exactly baby my car either. But I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy a PT, there are much better choices out there.

But I've heard absolute horror stories about Volkswagen's. I really really want a GTi, but I just don't have any faith in them. The whole maintenance thing was such a problem that VW is offering free maintenance for the first 3 years, but it's only for new cars and only for 3 years. If they made it 5 years, I'd be convinced, but 3 years seems like the perfect amount of time before things to start going wrong.

GTIs are imported directly from Germany.

Avoid entry level VWs and you should be fine.

Are you sure about that? GTi's being imported?

If that's true, I may have just found my next car. images/smilies/cool.gif

Now I hang around on VW sites and the most expensive thing that will go wrong when the car is like, not old and falling apart age where no car is reliable is the stupid power windows. Honestly I would be fine with roll up ones anyway. Horror stories happen with all cars, like I said my mom's PT is a crapbox and yours is fine.

If that's true, I may have just found my next car. images/smilies/cool.gif
Pop the hood and check. It should say where it was made in it.

All Golfs/Rabbits/GTIs are German made images/smilies/thumbup.gif (well, a few of them are made in South Africa, but those aren't US-bound)
