The roof antenna can send and receive better than a handheld because it's not inside a metal cage that blocks radio waves.

Also the CB is quite common here in the US and most fourwheelers have one. Some walkies only broadcast to other walkies of the same style. I could show up with a Motorolla and the rest of the guys in the group might have a mix of CB and any number of walkies. In mixed terrain those walkies are only good for line-of-sight and are kind of useful to have so a spotter can talk to a driver, but other than that they suck for vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

Handhelds tend to fall out of trucks while offroading for some strange reason - or if they don't fall out, they get launched into inaccessible parts of the interior, thus rendering them useless.

But yeah, creative CB handles kind of went the way of the custom Chevy short van. This isn't Smokey and the Bandit.

Yeah, we usually assign temporary CB handles to each other when offroading. Like "douchebag" or "dipshit" both work nicely.

Well, they're called HANDhelds, if they're falling out of trucks/getting caught in inaccessible places, you're not holding them right

Kind of need another unit in the truck.

Right, because that's way more simple than brining along a readio operator and it will increase the range and sound quality of a handheld to mathc a CB.
