Nice choice! The 2.6 is a lovely engine, silky smooth, yet powerful when needed. When you go looking for one, be on the lookout for moisture in the trunk (the leakage is easy to stop, but the damage has already been done), so check under all carpets in the trunk, especially the 2 lower wells to the sides, it accumulates there. Furtermore, if you have the chance, get the side-paneling (Sacco-Bretter) off to see if there's rust underneath them, especially on the 2 front doors. For the rest the 190E has very few specific weaknesses (that i know of), just the normal lot. Be sure to check the diff properly, they tend to be expensive to repair. Good luck on finding one.

Hi All,

I'm new here, so this is my first post.

I love old Mercedes', and your 190E looks absolutely stunning!

I also love the clatter and the rumble of the old 190D, a quality engine - still going strong over 200,000 miles on my friends '8?, D-Reg (UK) 190D.

Great Pics,
Richard

Bought a second set of wheels this week for the winter tyres, cos i don't want to be using my Speedlines all winter.

They're original 15" wheels, among others fitted to the 16v Cosworth models, affectionately known as "manhole covers" over here. I think you can see where they got that from. As soon as the weather gets cold enough for winter tyres, i'll post pics how they look on the car

When do you normally put winter tyres on your car? When it reaches a certain temperature, or when it begins to snow? I've always been interested, because us Aussies never really need to worry about this.

I generally do it either when the night temp drops below freezing regularly or the day temp drops below 7 C regularly, whichever comes first, although both happen almost simultaneously. Other than that, it's just a matter of whether you still feel safe on summer/ all weather tyres, which i currently still do.

Update time! images/smilies/smile.gif

Over the last month i've been a bit busy with my car. I had the airco looked after, it seems like it's in working order just near-empty. To get it refilled it need to have it converted to the newer type of gas, because the gas in mine is illegal. My dad knows a place where they will do the conversion + filling for 150eur, so i'll get to that when the winter draws to a close, won't really need it in the meantime anyways.
I had a few things in the interior taken care of. In all 190Es the dashboard cracks between the rear passenger light switch and the edge of the dash (just 3mm of plastic between switch and edge there). A guy with whom my dad does a lot of business did his magic with some superglue, paint and other stuff.

BEFORE:
http://pic.phyrefile.com/2007/11/18/crackold.jpg
AFTER:
http://pic.phyrefile.com/2007/11/18/cracknew.jpg

He also took care of 2 nasty tears in the passenger-side B-pillar vinyl upholstery. Sadly, i have no BEFORE pics, but 1 tear was over 10cm in length, the other almost 5 cm. I've encircled the repaired areas in both pics.

(click thumbnails for full pics)

And last but not least, i finally fitted the second set of wheels i bought last week with a set of Fulda Kristall Montero2 winter tyres.
http://pic.phyrefile.com/2007/11/18/1002740.JPG

There is only one slight problem atm. The Speedlines that were on it have slightly thicker hubs than the 16v-style wheels i bought, which means the bolts' heads stick out about 1cm beyond their holes.
http://pic.phyrefile.com/2007/11/18/1002741.JPG
I'm going to get some new bolts this week and i'm going to have them fitted at my parents' garage next friday (hydraulic lifts + power tools >>> small jack + hand-tools).

Since i got the car, it was lacking in power in the higher rev ranges. First i put it down to laziness because the previous owner claimed he never drove it faster than 90 kph. But when the problem worsened over time instead of getting better, i took it to the garage. After 3 weeks and a million part-swaps (they had a near identical 190E in stock luckily) it turned out the Jetronic's fuel distributor was faulty.

After they changed it everything was as it should be. Now I really am ready for a ring-trip images/smilies/biggrin.gif (although this month will be a bit problematic).
