Default Progress on Josty's beetle..

Hi guys, been a long time since I logged in the last time, but couldn't stand letting the 'old folks' from finalgear know what's going on with my beetle.

It's been restored in original state, (see picture).

It now has the original 1300cc 40hp engine, I bought a new one... an 1835cc dual Weber 40IDF carbs, AS41 carter (oil pan?), 041heads, Mahle Pistons, Engle 120 camshaft, lightent flywheel, and more.

I will be getting front-diskbrakes and some oil-temperature gauges. I still have the 'short' transmission, but maybe I'll replace that with the 'long' tranny, now the topspeed will be around 100mph/160km/h.

It will have around 90-100 hp (I keep the original dual exhausttips so it could have a few more horsepower) So it might be called a 'sleeper' lol.

Gonna bring it to the shop tonight and hopefully it will be back within 2 weeks!

This is the engine:

I'll keep you updated soon with some video's hopefully!

Later

Josty

Waaaaait a second! Since when is a Volvo rear-engined?

The Bug looks good, can you post some more photos of the engine bay and interior? I would love to see some "Before" photos too, just for comparison's sake. It looks like a great project!

Mancs! Thanks, I could post some pictures in this post!
Which Volkswagen did you get? Let's hope a Golf I?

Blind-Io: It's a Fiat Punto, not a Volvo

FBC: thanks, I'll be making some new pics when the new engine is installed!

It is a nice project, just got home from bringing it to a specialist. I am now getting:
Diskbrakes
Oil temp.gauges
New oil cooler (underneath car) + big fan
Bigger oil-pan (for better cooling of the oil)

Things to think about:
Bigger rear-wheel tyres (guy told me I would want to change them after I have had my first drive)
Drop it a few cm's for better stability in corners.

But I want to keep it as standard as possible (for the exterior and interior).
Minor changes (2 gaps on inside of fenders to be able to adjust the carbs better) are no big deal.

Interior (old pic, didn't change)

Engine-bay

I will be getting a list of all things to do in the next few days and then I'll decide what kind of oil cooler to get or which brakes.

Till then...

I'd love to restore a Zastava 600/750/850, a Fiat 600 for the Yugoslavian people. It was crap, but it holds a huge sentimental value to me. My first motoring memories are from the back seat of that car, during winter. It was awesome!

although, it was a newer version than this one, the doors opened normally, not suicide way.

Heh, this reminds me of my uncle's beetle. He has a similar thing going on with that car. Exept that he swapped the rear wheels for some really wide ones.

When can we expect the Porsche swap?

My uncle also had a beetle. A red one that he would take to the beach to go surfing.

I remember he was paranoid about it getting stolen, so every time he parked it, he would open the hood and unplug the starter or something. I can't really remember, it was a long time ago.

Nice beetle, btw. I'd still love to buy a Karmann Ghia or a Baja Bug someday.

Hey guys, thanks. Andy, no don't think I'll be back in LFS, haven't played it again since I left here...so I'm not the 'God on the tracks' as I used to be..

Mancs, nice Lada, read your thread, good to see it drifting!

Jeffy and Mischief, I´ll be posting some vids in the next two-three weeks!

I talked to some guy at the shop and he told me this engine, with this gearbox could easily beat his Golf I with 120hp...hehe

Two weeks ago I brought it to The Hague (Den Haag) to be inspected, engine has a strange ticking sound, deep inside. So that has to be figured out firs. Hopefully it'll be ready at the end of this month!

First of all, hi to everyone I know from 2 years ago!

Here I am for the interested..probably not many

Anyway, I've been driving the new engine for about 2 months now and like it very much.
It's got load of torque in the lower rpm-region and it will do burnouts in 2nd gear on dry roads (don't start about wet roads and corners in 3rd gear lol.

I will bring it to the dyno soon. I'm expecting around 100bhp. Could be some more, or less. It's not a screamer, 5.500 rpm is more than enough, I usually shift around 4500 (have a limiter now for safety).
Think the nM figure will explain alot more than the bhp.

Will have you updated on the dyno-test! Have some movies on youtube. My username there : ganta21.

Bye,

Jos

Nm, not nM.

Can't wait for some performance figures!
