It won't show past the brush scratches, you'll be too busy looking at those to notice whirls.

Quick question as a forum-wide search for posts by 'Spectre' containing 'mpg' turned up no results:
My father just ended a discussion what car to get as a relatively cheap dedicated long-distance driver with "Jaguars? This guy in Texas has to be quite rich, considering the fuel consumption"... ...so, how much do the big cats eat?

correct me if I'm wrong. But I seem to remeber spectre saying 23 mpg is possible with an XJ8.
Other than that..... spectre... you're up!

I get ~20 MPG (US gallons) in my XJR on the highway while cruising at an average speed of ~80 mph, if that's any indication. This drops to 17 mpg while going 90 mph on the Florida Turnpike, but that may be a distinctly different scenario, but that involves quite a lot of slowing down and passing, which automatically ruins mileage no matter where you are.

Well, an X308 XJ8 was originally rated at 18 mpg city, 24 highway, 20 combined. The X300 XJ6 was 17/23 with combined of 19. By altering your driving habits somewhat (and I'm not talking about hypermiling or driving slow), you can improve on the overall number by 2-4mpg - plus if you do more highway driving than anything else (which is what I'd assume in the land of the the Autobahn), you can get 26-28mpg on a steady 65mph cruise.
My XJR is a slightly different animal - as it's a blower car, it uses more fuel at higher RPMs. Original rating was 15/21, 17 combined. Again, driving habits make a difference; I recently made a run up to the Oklahoma border and got 24 mpg out of it at an average of 70mph. Around town, with -ahem- 'generous' use of the throttle, I get 17-18. Also, per the reports of European Jag owners, unless there's a displacement tax reason, there's no point in getting the smaller engine in such a heavy car. Fuel economy is apparently about the same between the 3.2L and 4.0L engines. Dr. Grip, tell your father this for me: Wenn Sie in eine bedrückende hohen Steuer-Land leben wollen, sollten Sie sich nicht beschweren sich über niedrigere Steuern an anderer Stelle. Labcoatguy, that's about what I get at 80mph, 20-22. Then again, I don't do 80 a lot because of traffic and large numbers of cops.

No, I've been dealing with work and other projects of late. I'm going to try to get back over there this week and pick up all the gear they removed from the dead car, though.

What happened to the carcass? If the insurance photographed the car you can get their copies.

The remains are still at the responsible dealership. I never filed a claim because the dealership dealt with it.
Whether they made a claim or just ate the cost isn't something I really cared about. Their check didn't bounce. ![]() Edit: A couple of newer shots.... this rain sure likes hanging around Dallas, it's been raining off and on for a month or so now.

Could you snap some photos when you go to get your parts? I'd really like to see the damage (if it's not too painful).

Any luck finding those Milan rims or are you just going to stick with these ones for now?

I'm sticking with these for now (they're the same size as the retrofits on my Series III), but I have found and ordered some Milans. Should be here in a few weeks - I had to send to Australia, strangely enough.

His wife who drives well like a little old lady and probably never exceeds 65 mph would get over 30 pure highway. Keep in mind this was a regular XJ8 not a Vanden Plas or a XJR so lighter weight and less horsepower. His territory was pretty much all of New England, until a couple of years ago when they shuffled up territory, so he did almost all highway with very little around town or city driving. I think his combined mileage dropped into the low 20s when he had to do too much city driving. |

That's way better mileage than my X308, even accounting for the differences in engine; the aluminum body must do it wonders.
