Default The 87 and 88 Toyota's

Heres what I drive. The black one is my daily and has a Schneider performance 270-60 cam and it used to have a weber 32/36. Now it has a stock carb on it. I was tired of re jetting the thing every time the temp changed 10deg.

this is the one with 267k on it. It's a beater but that makes it fun.
The poor old 4spd is about too give up but it still runs and drives, And sometimes i think the motor might even be a little stronger images/smilies/dry.gif.
The mirrors are on the fenders because the doors are removable.

Well first of all, they aren't real "Hilux" Toyotas, are they?

Actually in those years they are. The only difference is the badging.

The US branch of Toyota truck development doesn't split off from mainline Hilux development until 1995, when the 96 Tacoma was introduced. From 1976 until then, the Hilux was sold as the Pickup, the only difference being the badging. If you take a pre-Tacoma 'Pickup' apart, you will find many of the parts stamped with "Hilux".

It's mostly been downhill since 1995, though....

Interesting. Didn't know that. I am kind of sick of everyone with a 97 Tacoma saying "OMG I got a Hilux", so it's good to know that zookimike can actually walk the talk.

Hell, they don't even really look that similar (Tacoma v. same year Hilux). Yeah, most of the body panels are the same, but the front ends are different.

Specifically, the Tacoma has a weaker frame and softer suspension than the Hilux and was designed to be "more carlike" to boost sales. The first generation Tacoma had a weakened Hilux frame. The succeeding generations are actually built off the Land Cruiser Prado chassis. This was originally the "light duty" Land Cruiser variant and is now even softer as it is positioned as a sort of Infiniti FX competitor.

This may also be why the Tacoma guys have to have so much reinforcement installed to go offroad. They've had issues.

Kinda reminds me of the time I tried to pull a Tacoma off the rocks in a river with my Toyota. He didn't have a rear bumper on, nor any tow hooks, so they put the strap through a hole in his rear frame rail. First on one side, then the other, and I twisted both sides of his frame rails trying to get him out. He ended up bobbing his his truck shortly after that. hehe

I've owned about seven of this generation of truck, I love the hell out of them.

I really like the 2wd trucks because of the way they drive. I cant explain it. If you drive any other small jap built truck, All your doing is driving a truck. In a toyota it's a whole new story. But it's sad to say that the newer they get, The worse they get.

I've owned a TON of different cars and trucks but my heart is with older toyota's

I understand you there- old Toyotas- trucks or cars- are for some reason just different to drive.

Never driven a Nissan D21 or WD21 with the V6, have you? images/smilies/biggrin.gif

As much fun as the old Hilux was (I had an 82), the V6 Nissan Hardbody or Pathfinder is significantly more fun than any of the Toyota counterparts. images/smilies/biggrin.gif And they handle better - which is why I have a Pathfinder these days. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Yeah, I have some respect for those old Pathfinders after seeing old early 90s ski videos where they'd pretty much travel to the end of the Earth in them.

Yeah... basically the US rule of thumb IMHO is if you want a 4 cylinder Japanese truck, get a pre-Tacoma Toyota (though the I4 Nissans are a close second). If you want a V6, there's no comparison - Toyota's truck V6s are pathetic, so Nissan is the only choice there.

And, IMHO, the Nissans have a better suspension design for on-road use.

But, if you want an I4 mini truck, the two in post one are very, very hard to beat. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Oh yeah. Hardbody's are great trucks. The ka and the the old z24 engines are right up there for sure.
I also like the vg30's in a the 5spd trucks. They do boogie. That would be the second choice if I had too buy another truck.images/smilies/cheers.gif

I guess that explains why some older Toyota truck owners seem to want to swap a straight-six 5M-GE(my car's engine) instead.

I'm of the same mindset only on the cars side. I also can't explain it myself...I drive a very fun to drive new car(certainly not a current Toyota)...only to get back into my old Toyota and enjoy it even more.

Nice trucks btw.
