Default 11x01 - What codec? It's not playing.

This, as I'm sure you'll understand, is super frustrating. The Angelic rip that FinalGear linked to finished downloading just now, and it simply will not play. I've tried VLC and Quicktime (with Perian, and all sorts of other codec packs). The error log says that it can't recognize the file type. It finished downloading successfully, as far as I know.

Do you guys have any idea what codec this was encoded with? It's frustrating the hell out of me right now.

Mac OS X - 10.5.3, all the latest updates to Quicktime, et. al.

The FAQ exists for a reason. images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm not sure where to get a copy of Xvid for Mac though.

I read the FAQ, and I've played Xvid files before (I have all the old TGs, too), so I automatically assumed this would be Xvid too. But it doesn't want to play. I have the latest Xvid and everything images/smilies/sad.gif

EDIT: If it helps, the error I'm getting in VLC is "main: mutex_unlock failed at misc/variables.c:817 (22:Invalid argument)"

Odd, no problems here.

And come to think of it, I don't have the Xvid codec. I use ffdshow.

*goes to update the FAQ*

I have a feeling your file is corrupted.
VLC should play the file with no issues at all, and that is a solution that works across all OS's. And if you must play in Quicktime Perian will also handle it. I was able to watch the new rip (and all rips of TG) on my mac using VLC and recently have been using Quicktime+Perian with no problem at all.
So I would check you file to make sure its not corrupted or maybe redownload it.

Sorry, but that's poor advice as that's not really possible with BitTorrent. Each piece is hash checked as is the total file.

There's also no need to redownload the whole file if it is indeed corrupted. BitTorrent treats files as chunks. Just point the torrent at the "completed" file and it will check it for completeness. If it's not complete, it'll keep the good parts and redownload the bad parts.

So in summary, it's probably fine, but you can stop the file and then do "Force Recheck" if you're worried.

I still have no idea what the issue is/was, but I got another copy from the HTTP link and yet another from Bittorrent, and both work. Very odd, as I've never had any issues playing back TGs before.

Thanks all, though.

Well I might not have been 100% off then huh =P

Your right Viper that BT itself would do a hash check to make sure the file is not corrupted while downloading but if the guy moved the file or has something messed up with his file system/hd/anything it could caused the file to corrupt and from the sound of his problem and now his solution that might have been the case.

I better solution is what you stated, do a force check on the file with the BT client and it will replace the bad parts. But not many people leave the torrent running and might have already removed it from their client. So my solution was more simple, even if its incorrect in spirit =P
