It's just a site where you give it the URL of the page with the video and it processes it and gives you back a direct link to the video file. Usually it's a FLV (Flash video file) though.

No, it doesn't host anything. It just processes the link you put in and gives you a direct link to the source video file so you can download it from the actual site where it's hosted.

I use www.youtubex.com for youtube files, then Riva FLV encoder to make it into an AVI file.
