Default How to play DVD rips on a Mac

Before I ask my question.. I have done a search and I couldn't find the answer but then again I might just be having a blonde moment.

I am trying to work how to play DVD rips on a Mac. I have downloaded a few torrents recently that have these files:
.nfo
.r01
.r02
.r03
.r04
.r05
etc
.rar
.sfv
and then a sample file which is normally a avi file of a minute or so of the video.

I know there is a simple answer to this one but I just can't work it out images/smilies/sad.gif

Thanks in advance for your help.

That is not a video file, you need to un-rar it first. Drag the .rar files to Stuff-it Expander and it will build the file for you. When that's done you should have a .avi file that you can play using VLC player which is a free download online!

those files are a part of a .rar comrpessed file. You need a rar extractor, similar to WinZIP for zip files.

Open the .rar file with a compatible archiver app (StuffIt? I don't know Macs), and extract it to a directory.

^That's correct. You can use Stuffit Expander or UnRarX, both are very good at extraction and both work quickly.

I had no clue StuffIt did RAR files as well.

But I use UnRarX and it works fine. Very simple and quick... just open up the first file with it and it will put a video file on your desktop. Then use VLC (or QuckTime with proper codecs, LAWLZ!) and play the file. That's it!

in this sequence, the .rar file is the first, not .r01.

But like they said, this is a segmented release (for more convenient transfers), unrar, get rid of rar files, play the .avi, .ogm, .mkv or what have you.

No offense, but why are some Mac users a bit clueless? I thought Macs "just work".

Macs "just work" for very basic things... great, you can edit movies and make a website right out of the box. But doing more advanced things can be a little taxing, especially if you're used to Windows.

My coworker just bought a Macbook and I think she's seriously retarded. I installed NeoOffice and she didn't know how to save (or open) documents as .doc. Eventually I made that the default format to make it easier for her (which I should have done in the first place).

Never surprises me. Apple builds their entire platform around the fact that their users are too dumb to switch on their computer.

Another reason I hate Macs. When stupid users can use powerful tools because they are so far dumbed down, only stupid things happen as a result.

All too true, we're all idiots. Thanks for helping this idiot out.
I had actually tried uncompressing the file as I knew that a .rar is a compressed file but I am running Leopard and instead of Stuffit I was just using the Archive Utility that is included with the system, stupid me (at least I gave you more proof).

Just install The Unarchiver, it will handle all the major compression formats, and works just like the built-in decompressor. To install just run it once and drag it wherever you want it, I put it under /Applications/Utilities.

That's merely security by obscurity.

Macs aren't really that much more secure, but since only 14 people use them, hackers don't go to the effort of making many viruses for them.

Agreed, Windows XP/Vista is pretty safe as long as you use the firewall and avoid IE. I love Mac OS X, but not because of the security.

The only virus I've ever gotten was from running an EXE I stupidly downloaded from an insecure source, i.e. my own fault.
