VLC, Media Player Classic (probably), Winamp, etc.. The list goes on and on. images/smilies/wink.gif

I'd get VLC personally. You should have it anyway as it'll pretty much play anything under the sun. images/smilies/smile.gif

MP4 is a container, like avi. So the video and audio streams inside can be encoded in various ways.

First of all you will need a mp4 splitter.
Haali's Media Splitter is taken as the standard.
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe

After installing, try opening the file in MPC or WMP.
If you can't see video or audio, then download Gspot
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/GSpot260RC1.zip
and open the video file to analyze the various streams.

Normally it will be a combination of H264 + AAC.
After you found out how the video and audio are encoded, you can look them up on the net.

On the other hand, you can just download VLC.

videolan updated to 0.8.6 over the weekend and one of the improvements is better h.264 playback. i tested it out and it is much better than before. my powerbook is 3.5 years old and could play this mp4 i had. it showed a frame about once every 5-10 seconds. now it plays it pretty smooth. i recommend getting the update.
