Default Playing on Windows Media Center - Help!

I would like to sit down in front of the tv, with my speakers, and enjoy the show.. images/smilies/smile.gif

However, I can not get Top Gear to play on my Media Center. Other videos I have on my computer work, but typically not Top Gear / Fifth Gear.

The error message:
"The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec is not installed or the file is corrupted."

Is there a codec out there for this? I've searched, and yes my videos play on my WMP (or VLC at that).

You need XVid or DivX to play VUK's rips in Windows Media Player. But, if they're not playing in VLC, then there's something wrong with the files themselves.

you need ffdshow. Don't trust the n00b of the year! Well, technically he is right, but we really don't wat you back here for some weird mpeg4 standard the 2 original codecs won't play... We got some n00bish threads this evening!

//edit: Did a quick search, and it seems like some peoples mce doesn't like the xvid and divx codec, so you might have them already installed. If you got some funky shit like kazzaa codec pack, get rid of it. FFDshow should be perfectly worky!

epp_b, they are playing in WMP and VLC. I'm talking about Media Center.

Buba, you guys don't want me back here?

Buba is right, ffdshow is necessary for playback in Windows Media Center.

I have FFdshow, but I'm still getting the error. Maybe there is a way to set it up I don't know about?

Do you have the latest build of ffdshow? Are you running Vista or XP?

Works fine here in Vista Home Premium with this version of ffdshow.

I like it a lot so far. I've been using the Betas for about a year until I finally bought the academic version ($70) a couple of weeks ago. No major problems yet!

Nah, come on. It works with plain MCE as well. A friend of mine runs it, and we got TG files to play with ffdshow...

Just go to a MCE community and not a car related community. Or search on google... When I did that yesterday I came up with tons of forum hits...

And I didn't say, "I don't want you back..." bu I don't want you to run into problems with non standard files that ffdshow plays and a specialized codec like xvid doesn't...

ANYWAY: Try this:

Goto you ffdshow video decoder configuration
click the second tab on the right "Info&debug"
got the ffdshow merit section and pull the slider all the was to the right, very high

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/4465/unbenanntct7.jpg

If this doesn't work, you'll have to search for a programm that lets you adjust system wide codec merit (determines the importance of a codec. Maybe that when mce runs it has a higher merit than ffdshow---)

//edit, just because I'm a good soul... http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...er_Manager.htm

MCE has some random issue with codec recognition. I used to run it before it randomly stopped playing what it used to. Try uninstalling all of the codecs you have and clean out all the registry entries with some good program (I haven't used Windows in a while so dunno what they got now). Then try installing FFDshow alone and see if it plays everything.

to get rid of all kinds of trouble, download the Community codec pack. It comes with media player classic, u can also use ur own WMP.

http://www.cccp-project.net/

to have some surround?

google search for AC3 filter, make sure its version 1.01a, not older.

I hope my first post on here is a bit useful:

Confirmed: ffdshow works! I tried re-installing divx, core media player, xvid, but those didn't work...

Platform: Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10

thanks

Just to check up, I am referring to playing my videos on my television set through Xbox 360's (media extender).

My videos work fine on my laptop, but only my Top Gear / Fifth Gear videos will not play through to my TV.

Also, I now run Vista.
