Problem.... um, please help...

Um, I'm brand new to the site, and am experiencing problems. I've tried downloading one of the episodes of Top Gear (1st episode of the first 'new' series), and the download speed onto utorrent is practically nonexistant.

So, if anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it. What is the average download time for an episode, as my computer said it would take around 4 1/2 hours. I've got a BT internet connection, so is that a factor too?

OK, as you can probably tell, I'm a complete novice at this, so please help me if you can... images/smilies/sad.gif

You are most likely expeciencing a disadvantage of the Torrent system: the availability of older files. There are only few seeders of those files left,l which means that your Torrent software will only find few people to download from, resulting in a slow download speed. Having 4 1/2 hours left for one episode doesn't sound that bad though. Apart from getting popular, new stuff, downloading through a newtork like Bittorrent can not be compared to downloading files from a server. The server is there to offer the file with all the speed it can give you. In the Network however, only the users sharing the file will offer you uploads. Therefor, the speed very much depends on the file, or to be more precise its age and popularity.

the Interceptor

Check some of the FTP servers available in the video offers section (always up, don't have the same problems as torrents). I think 95's FTP has all of the Top Gear episodes.

Interceptor is probably correct. Torrents are by far the best way to handle new, popular downloads due to the HUGE amount of bandwidth involved.

However, on older episodes (i.e. from many years ago), torrents tend to die out and FTPs are often the faster method.

Doubt it the lack of seeds, a quick mininova search showed that both versions, aka scene and ours are still well enough seeded.

Check a site like portforward.com , double check that you either dl a 700 MB version marked in some way eztv or a 425 mb version, both have enough seeds, tell us your Inet connection, maybe its just slow. Also your isp could cap the BT ports.... Tons of possibilities. And torrents take a while to get going, the public ones at least.

I guess we also should define what "non-existant download speed" means. If she meant the 425MB version, 4 1/2 hours mean 26,8kByte/s, if the 700MB is in question, 4 1/2 hours means 44,2 kByte/s. For an older torrent, that's not really slow, is it?
