Default Q: Fifth Gear torrent sizes

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, but forgive me, I'm new here.

I wonder why all torrents what I can find about Fifth Gear espisodes are only half size from for example typical Top Gear episode?

The quality really goes down when 1 hour is being compressed to 350mb size images/smilies/wacko.gif
It may look "ok" from comp screen but I bet many of us here have some HD -tellys or videoprojectors (like myself) and those 350mb -size episodes look just next to awfully.. images/smilies/sad.gif

So .. question remains, why?

1. Fifth Gear is not recorded in HD, so there's little purpose in creating huge rips
2. 350MB is a nice size to fit a whole season onto a DVD-R.
3. 350MB is a nice size to download reasonably quickly

If you want higher quality rips, you'll have to find a different source or appeal to the cappers to provide higher quality rips.

I don't think anyone from the er......... Ripping people does 700MB files for under 1 hours shows. Fifth Gear is 42 minutes. Also, the video looks fine on my 52 inch telly played off my PS3. images/smilies/smile.gif

epp_b Top Gear isn't recorded in HD, so your #1 doesn't really make sense. images/smilies/smile.gif

Yes, here's the main point. Fifth Gear's eps are only 2/3 as long as a Top Gear ep.

Channel 5 has ad breaks (and an hourly quick news update!), BBC doesn't. So that's one fairly large reason there's a difference in file size - less play time.

Read the first paragraph or so under "release rules": http://rules.nukenet.info/p.html?id=2007_TV.nfo (zoom in on the image)

Summary:

Fifth Gear is an hour show with commercials. Like American TV shows, this makes is about 42 minutes worth of video, so 350MB is the standard.

Top Gear is an hour show with no commercials. At the same MB/minute, that'd work out to around 425MB (which is what we used to release at when we did our own rips that took much longer to release). However, most Scene groups just go immediately from 350MB up to 700MB as most of the rules are based around CD (and DVD somewhat) disc sizes.

60 minutes of video crammed into 350MB would look like crap and ~42 minutes of video in 700MB would be extreme overkill, especially since it's only a digital-signal (non-HD) source.

Ok, thank you.

I'm not familiar with this whole .torrent -system nor the things that decides the size of certain show.

Furthermore, 350mb looks fine on a "nowadays standard" LCD TV.
