Default Torrent download speeds...almost non-existant

Hey folks, hope you can lend a hand.

I'm using Bitornado as the client, I'm running Win Media Center, and everytime I download torrents, of any kind, I get a 0kb/s - 3kb/s speeds, never faster, so its taking almost a week to download these shows.

I have no router, I don't know about firewalls or how that works, but I have the fastest internet my area provides, but these torrents are just hurtin.

I'm plugged in straight from my modem to the computer, so if you guys have any tips or tricks for me to increase the speed of the downloads, that would be greatly appreciated.

You have a wonderful site here, and I hope to become a frequent visitor. Thank you very much for your time.

Thanks in advance

A basic recommendation that I can provide you with is to download uTorrent. Some of the other members will be able to help you in a more technical way should you need it.

What type of internet connection are you on?

Dont use BitTornado, afaik it even contains malware.

Get utorrent, and see how that goes. Also use a reliable torrent that shows many seeders/peers from some place like mininova.org to test.

I'll get that utorrent now, I'm on a cable internet connection, I believe the fastest speed is 512kb/s... not quite sure.

I have been downloading torrents from Mininova, no where else yet. An example is the latest episode of Fifth Gear, from mininova, fastest speed is 3kb/s.

But I'll try this utorrent, and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

Ok... installed utorrent, great program, but I'm still getting the same speeds, even connected to over 30 peers, yet its still slow as ever.

Should I be adjusting something somewhere?

might be something as simple as the win xp firewall stopping it. make sure that you have the correct ports forwarded in the win xp firewall.

Thanks guys, yeah, no router here, but I tinkered with the XP firewall a bit, does 50-70kb/s sound better? Thats about what I'm gettin now with the Fifth Gear episodes.

All depends on the episode. Older torrents have much less people on them, so speeds will be slow, but the newest one or two should max out your download speed, assuming you have your settings right (i.e. are uploading a decent amount and such).

0-3 vs 50-70

If in both cases you mean kb/s (kilobits) or KB/s (kilobytes), then yeah its an improvement images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm having the same problem.

I use UTorrent, on Vista Ultimate. I have always seen never more than 11kB/s whilst downloading Top Gear episodes.

What is going on? Its so annoying to have something eating away at my internet for so long.
