Ugh, I almost killed my internet..twice

This is getting out of hand. I've been trying to download old Top Gear episodes (89-91) using utorrent and I tried the port forwarding and static IP techinique, thinking I knew about it, and ending up wrecking my LAN and internet.

I've been working literally 3 hours trying to get it back, it coming in and out, sometimes going out right before I finish posting this message on this website.

So I want to know, how can I switch everything back to normal again? It won't let me change either of my two computers in the network back to automatically obtain DNS and IP address's because then I lose my LAN and internet.

Please help, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep this internet connection either but I would still appreciate an answer.

I have a huge headache because of this. I just wanted to download some good old Top Gear episodes then share them on an FTP :'(

First of all, what kind of internet connection do you have? It sounds like something pretty screwy.

Aorry for taking so long to respond, had to fix my internet AGAIN.

I have Comcast cable internet and a linksys ethernet system that connects 3 (not 2 sorry) computers to the internet.

I'm pretty sure I finally port forwarded, but most likely did it wrong, I'm only getting about 13 avg kb/s download.

So if you set it back to obtain everything automatically, it all goes down? Even after you reboot?

As a test, first set it to obtain automatically, shut your PC down, and then just try bypassing your router for a moment and plug your cable modem directly into your PC and see if it's your router that is causing the connectivity issues.

And make sure you didn't turn off DHCP at the router as this is the function that ensures each computer obtains it's own IP address etc automatically!

In my Linksys router the port forwarding functions are under the "Applications and Gaming" tab and then "port range forwarding". Enter the IP address of the computer in question (again this is after setting up the LAN correctly and checking DHCP is on) and the port range you want forwarded to that computer. Set it to both protocols.

If I were you, I'd attack one problem at a time. Sort out the LAN first and ensure you can connect fine to other computers on the network as if the LAN doesn't work, the internet won't work. Once the LAN is fine then check up and change the internet settings...

possible you have a crappy router?

i have one, and if i reset it, or unplug it from electricity, and takes about an hour before he figured everything out and start giving IPs and stuff again. i just have to wait untill it settles itself

I'll try all this. I'm hopeless at router stuff though. I lose my internet so easily.
