Default 1/4 mile times

Can some one please explain why I have never seen a manufacturer spec claim faster than 15sec for their standard road cars. But then you hear kids talking how there cars do the 1/4 in 10sec when it's a right POS.

Especially when a MClaren F1 can't do it faster than about 10sec's and that gets from 0-60 in 3 sec and 200mph in 28secs??

Is there two ways of measuring this?? is a drag strip 1/4 shorter?? please explain.

Is it just a case that their lying basteds? images/smilies/smile.gif

I think it is much easier to get a car to go fast in a straight line than it is to have a balanced car (Mc F1). So kids throw in a big engine, fat tires, strip everything out, and run 12s.

BTW: I think the Maclaren F1 does the quarter in 11.5 seconds
BTW2: My bike does the quarter in 10.5 seconds images/smilies/mrgreen.gif

Cause as you said... its a standard road car. Anytime I have ever gone to Test n Tune days at my local drag strip at willowbank, everyone there has 12 inch fat rear tyres and only one seat it the car and no interior and only a quarter tank of petrol.

if you know a ferrari 360 does about 12s

those 15s are quiet right, and 10s is BS (unless serious money is invested)

Always understate than overstate, which then makes it less likely that you'll have unhappy customers. Also most of the people who go to the 1/4 mile days have modified their cars extensively.

Australian manufacturers claim under 15. Most can make it too (we have some under 14).

There are many cars that can go below 15 seconds in the US. Come on! You're in the UK! I'm sure those R-badged Jags can do 14's.

If you've driven a 14 or 13 second car, you know that it's a tad bit too fast for your typical idiot drivers. They can make an American style dragster, but the whole point of a road car is to be multi-purpose and BALANCED! Something that most cars lack in the US. Here, it's all about straight line speed bragging rights. They don't do the other stuff half as well as European and Japanese cars that are slower in the quarter mile dash. (I'm not talking about the Corvette and the Viper. Just making a general comment on all their cars.)

On my cousins previous Subaru Forester STi, it could do a 12sec 1/4 mile even on stock 16" rims, so I could see a 10sec 1/4 mile pretty in reach.

If you just lightened the car abit, put fatter tires and just get a couple more horses in the car, the car would be in the high 10's for 1/4 mile

I am now... although to be honest i don't really like hanging out with much of that crowd. There's just something about making cars hideous and unbearably loud that doesn't do it for me. It is fun to blow the crap out of them at traffic light drags though. images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm giving them a chance though, so i'm going on the bunya mtn cruise later this month (24th i think), but only if my new suspension parts come in soon.

Hmm.. Not sure I agree with this much. In reach = a lot of time, effort and money (USD$20,000+)

It is truly hard work to get a car to do anything lower than a 12. Most subaru's will do a 13, or perhaps a high 12 with a small amount of work and an exhaust/intake kit, but the 11 and 10 territory is hard to reach.

For a start, Subaru's clutches are rubbish and once you get them to low 11s, the gearbox starts to fall apart and you generally have to install a dog box to take the load.

In the case of PMS (Shane Pavey's) WRX in Australia it took a lot of money, effort, clutches, gearboxes, intercoolers, etc to get into the 10's.
The car is here, listed 17th fastest Street 4WD in Australia:

http://www.fullboost.com.au/records.php?class=9

The car has a 2.5litre engine with trick turbos and took many months of tuning and building. Unfortunately, the creator's website has been refreshed and all of the details have been removed. You can still read about it here:

http://www.fastfoursvip.com/articles....aspx?view=202

Even with 550hp on regular fuel it will only do a 10.7 second quarter mile.

^I agree with you that Subaru's gearbox are rubbish and therefore eats up the clutch really bad, but the reason why Subaru's do so well in 1/4 miles is because of its AWD, it barely wheel-slips off the line... maybe 10secnds might be a rad ambitious but 11secs in a impreza is well within reach IMO

Yeah they are a bit of a bunch of hardcores. Hence I like to get away to here every once in a while... or all the time.

Hi dudes, I'm also from Brisvegas. images/smilies/thumbsup.gif No car at the moment, though.

Vote on my Poll to see which car I should buy, since I sold my 97 Civic 6 months ago.
It's under Automotive Discussion, Questions & Answers, [ Poll ] Which Car should I buy??? (Should be a bit Luxurious/Sporty).

Thanks images/smilies/smile.gif
P.S. leppy, i love your signature image on the left....it makes me laugh every time I see it.

I found this 1/4 mile simulator that I thought you all might like to see:

http://www.jsread.com/tvr/quartermile.html

Apparently it is very accurate and you can race the cars to see what comes out on top.
It also includes the Mclaren F1.
