My transmission is clunking a bit when I shift gears.
If I make a real effort I can get it to not clunk, but if I ever shift a bit to quick or hard the whole transmission seems to move. It also feels like it moves when I rev the engine. I was thinking it's a trans mount (after 250 000kms I'd sort of expect these things to start wearing out) but could it also be engine mounts? If I replace one is it good to do them all at the same time? (ie. the two motor mounts and the trans mount) Also, secondary question. My powersteerimg pump is squeaking (the pulley, not the belt) can this do any damage to anything else, or with the pump just continue to deteriorate by itself? Thanks!

Yes, do all of them at the same time. You might as well, since you'll be pulling the transmission with the motor.
I broke a pressure line to my power steering pump in the Scion. It eventually ran out of fluid, and I lost my power steering. Wasn't a big deal... ... and then it caught fire a couple months later.

Ok, I figured it would be a good idea to replace all of them.
As for the powersteering pump, I'm not too worried. I'm pretty sure it's just the bearings in the pulley that are squeaking and if the bearing does die then I can live with no powersteering for a while.

I would get some poly mounts, and if you do the mounts one at a time, you don't have to pull the motor.

XJ.
I do plan on using poly mounts. The small amount of extra $$$ is well worth it. I've changed a trans mount on an XJ before, it's not a huge job. (Yah yah, why would I buy an XJ in need of all this work? I got a killer deal on it, and the drivetrain/body are in superb shape)

You could also have a bad u-joint at the rear.. check them as well.
And about the PS Pump, why wait for something so easy / cheap to fix? You'd have many junkyards just get a pump of one.. swap the pump or the pulley your choice.. or if you can change the bearing..just do that, much better than getting an old pulley. Yes you can live without the PS, but not exactly. I mean, lol.. its a REALLY tough job on a Cherokee :S have had a good 17 kilometer drive with PS not working. Btw, when you shift when the brake pedal is pressed hard, what happens then?
Also changing the tranny or engine mounts on a cherokee are easy peasy :p And get ALL of the mounts replaced with poly ones since you have an option and just do it because you'd not be replacing them anytime soon then! |
