My grandfather has a 2006 Mazda MX-5. He is looking to make it faster.
• What are the stage I upgrades for his car (if there are any)? • What would a good ECU upgrade be? • What would a good turbocharger or supercharger for his car be? Please list websites any websites that you have, and if you have done the upgrade yourself. My grandfather is very experienced in working with cars and would have no problem with the skill level required for the upgrades. Thanks. |

While there are a few MX5 owners here, you'd be better off posting in a dedicated Miata forum.
Since you just know the first response is going to recommend an LS swap.

I'd say do a 13B swap.

Hmm... I have an aftermarket ECU. Hydra Nemesis. It's pretty nice, but I've never had the chance to compare the true details of operation with other ECUs so I can't say it's the absolute best. If it's completely stock i'd say removing weight and a better exhaust would help. If you're not too concerned with the interior's cushyness, remove some of the plastic and insulation.

Flyin' Miata has a good Turbo kit and I believe Cosworth makes a supercharger. But then you'll need better tires and brake pads at the least, and will have to deal with the added maintenance of FI. Hydra and Megasquirt are the typical ECU's but they're a bit pointless without forced induction. If he's looking for fun he's best off with a better front sway bar, new shocks/springs, and an exhaust.

If you add a turbo the Garrett GT28RS, AKA, disco potato would make a good choice.

If you haven't already, go to www.miata.net and check around, specifically at the large forum based off there (best around for Miatas).
There isn't much really (yet) for the NC-model (2006+), and Cosworth has taken their supercharger off the market due to exploding engines (two in Europe, one in North America). Despite their blame falling on the strength of the connecting rods, it's knock that kills a boosted engine, and the Sniper tune (reflash of the ecu) is suspect. Sniper also makes a naturally aspirated ecu reflash, which I tried, but found that it made no more power than my 2007 already makes with the AEM / Mazdaspeed cold air intake, and Good-Win Racing header, mid-pipe, and muffler, so out it came. Bell Engineering Group Inc. has a turbo kit for the NC, which utilizes the Exide piggy-back computer. The jury's still out how that will really work... So, at this time, there's nothing for the ecu, and no bullet-proof reliable forced induction system, very much unlike the NA (1990-97) and NB (1999-2005) models. No LS? engine swap kit yet either. Look to www.flyinmiata.com for that sometime in the future, as they've either sent, or are soon to, a bare chassis down to Florida for prototyping a kit, per my visit there this past May. |
