Something else to take into consideration is where the exhaust is routed. Like on my Ranger, the exhaust runs on the right side of the truck and the filler is on the left.

Which has already been mentioned, and there are lots of examples otherwise...

I know on fox Mustangs with dual exhaust the fuel tank sits behind the rear axle and the exhaust routes around it.
