Horn sounds like a sick duck

Recently, my horn went out. It came back to life after replacing the fuse...sort of. It now sounds like a sick duck. It's not as loud, and it kind of reminds me of one of those really squeaky farts that people do when they lean over and try to squeeze one out silently, but then they fail at being sneaky and emit a little "phrrrt!" anyway. That's the sound. And that's not good, because I'd rather it sound like a horn than a fart when I lock my car.

Any suggestions? It's an '02 Altima with a horn/fuse box that's stuck in right next to the car battery. One odd thing I noticed, though: the fuse for the horn originally said "15" on it, and the one that I got to replace it says "20." I don't think that would make a difference (that just means I got a fuse with more capacity to handle electrical-type crap, right?), but I don't know anything about horn problems. Everything else seems to be working as usual.

From my knowledge of older style horns, I'd say look for a screw on the side that obviously isn't holding it together, it's an adjusting screw and adjusts the output of the horn as you turn it. I don't know if the horn in your car will have that though.

The horn might have that adjustment screw, but honestly you might as well replace them. Nissan used a generic horn and you can get a much louder and even more Italian sounding horn at any auto parts shop for cheap.

If you're nearby, I can help you put it in.

I'm all the way down in Wacko.

The big box labelled "horn" in with the fuses just looked like a big black box. Manual doesn't say much of anything about the horn aside from "it's on the steering wheel" and "don't take apart the steering wheel unless you want a face full of airbag."

Will look for horn screws tomorrow, though. I don't have much money to pay for...well, anything right now.

Heh, I was just down there last weekend.

That's not where the horn is mounted. That's where the horn relay and fuses are. The actual horn is (IIRC) up front around the radiator.

This is what your horn looks like (borrowed from a place selling parts):

If it is "squeeking" then it is a bad ground connection(some use the bracket as the ground and only send power to it). You can remove the assembly, clean the connection/rust, then rebolt it. The most likely location of the horn is in the front bumper ahead of the wheel-well on the drivers side.

I see it every once in a while on Altima's. OEM horn IIRC is under $30.

*EDIT* just re-read your description; the horn that is bad is not where horns normally are, but on the passenger side fenderwell. Nissan uses two horns for either beeping or the alarm.

I only poke over here every few days, but that is the funniest description of a sound I have ever heard in my entire life.

While glancing at this thread I transposed the 'i' in sick and the 'u' in duck. I hope I'm not the only one...

    Every. Single. Time.

More specifically, at a glance I see the rest of the sentence as "so-and-so likes to..."

Wait, there's two horns? GRRR. Both seem to be doing the same thing, although the lock horn does it worse than the regular horn. The regular horn seemed weak, too, though.
