My Dad is now considering the purchase of an MX-5 in lieu of a XK. He likes the idea, but a 0-60 time of ~8 seconds is a bit low for him. What are the best turbo kits out there? Would a supercharger be a better option?
Would it be better to look for a series one which has already undergone a turbo/exhaust upgrade? And would a suspension kit bring a first gen up to the prowess of a current generation car?

V8 swap FTW! Its been done plenty of times, so you'll be able to find people to ask for help and an LS1 weighs barely more than the stock motor so the handling will be preserved. If you're set on FI then check out miataturbo.net and miata.net

He dosen't want to do something as involving as an engine swap. I might add that he is looking for something cheaper than a XK. A $6000 kit wouldn't be the best option.

There's always this, if the engine's been replaced. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ctd/1241681581.html

Flyin miata kits are good, but their ecu's are expensive and the O2 sensors aren't meant to be used that way. Greddy turbo kits for 1.6l cars are dirt cheap. I've been fighting temptation to buy one at $1300 for mine. I'd say go with the Mazdaspeed MX-5, so long as he doesn't want to do engine mods then. 2 friends of mine have 'em and both wished they had just bought regular 1.8l cars and upgraded them, would have been cheaper in the end. The only problem with getting one pre-modded is you don't know what the guy may have said "aww fuck it, thats good enough." Is he planning to use this as just a fun car or as a daily?

It will be used as just a fun car. Once I told him of the Mazdaspeed he liked it. Now he is looking for either one of those or a used XK8 with a replaced engine. He doesn't have an issue with a bolt on kit, but things like engine swaps are a bit much. If an engine swap wasn't a concern he would get an MGB with a 302.

My favorite neg rep is from my MG's thread: "OMFG!!! rubber bumpers".

Tell him to drive a stock MK1 first. I dare say he'll soon forget about 0-60 times and bhp figures. For what it's worth, a BBR, Mazdaspeed or any other low-PSI (GReddy) turbo set-up really doesn't make them that much faster. The best kits out there are the BEGI turbos, and for s/c's look at Jackson Racing (Mp45 for 1.6L and Mp62 for 1.8L). These cars only really 'feel' powerful pushing between 2-250bhp. Any more is simply too much, and any less still feels a bit lame if you've ever driven a powerful car before. If power and speed was something that's particularly important, I'd probably look elsewhere, such as an Integra Type-R.
*waits for the anti-FWD crowd*

Owning a MazdaSpeed Miata and have driven both NAs and NBs I would say the MazdaSpeed version would very well fit your dad's wants.
Mods for the MazdaSpeed are not that expensive. With just a few simple upgrades, you can be putting down 200 hp to the wheels. I am going to keep mine "stock", because it is plenty fast for me. .. |
