I had a test drive in a S80 AWD and it is a trully superb car. It gets my vote.

If you need something cheaper - the S60 is rather excellent too. Seriously, you can't go wrong if you get a Volvo

Which is why you buy a CPO car.

The CPO warranty is six years 100,000 miles and covers just about every part of the car but wear items, cosmetic items and the radio. Plus no deductible for warranty repairs.

If the Volvo doesn't has minimal problems then keep it past 100,000 miles. If it does have problems dump it before the 100,000 mile mark.

Its not like new Volvos are unreliable anyway. The S60 in particular has been built for so long on the same platform that it is very, very reliable.

Exactly. She is not buying a used car. It will have warranty. I doubt that a new Infinity will be cheaper to repair, if you needed to.

You may have woken the local Datson fanboy.

Reliability is a plus for resale value.

This was just announced to have a new, fairly mom-friend purple color available... (yes, I'm ignoring all criteria)

Resale value is a double edged sword though. More expensive new obviously means more expensive used. A car with high resale value doesn't necessarily make a good buy used. A Lexus or Acura simply doesn't depreciate at a fast enough rate to make a good buy as a couple year old CPO car.

You have to pay more for them when new too so maybe you don't get a good a deal when you first buy the car.

Also resale doesn't really matter once a car is past six or seven years old and has over 100,000 miles.

A customer of mine is trading in a 2003 S60 AWD with about 120,000 on it. Real wholesale value on it is about 5,500 but it is so nice, looks like it has about 60,000 on it, and has all the service records we are giving then 6,500 for it. A ES300 back in 2003 cost about the same amount new but you couldn't get AWD with that car and now it would be worth about 1,000 dollars more with the same miles.

An Acura TL that you also couldn't get AWD on cost a couple thousand dollars less and now is worth about a 1,000 dollars less with the same miles.

A 1,000 dollars after seven years really isn't a big deal. They would have spent more on snow tires to get around in the winter here with the ES300. Or they might have killed themselves because it was a such a boring car to drive.

Just out of curiosity, and if it's not a trade secret - you are buying it for $6,500 and you are re-selling it for...?

You people suggesting fancy fast cars for the old lady

You know what my grandmother bought at 60? A beetle. Then a runaway pickup took the front off and she bought the one I am driving. The first one had heated seats too

Honda Odyssey. My parents are in their mid-70's and love their Odyssey; my father, after driving Pontiac's for 49 years (first Pontiac was a '57 Bonneville!), has vowed to never purchase an American car again. It is that good.

Again, thanks everyone. We're heading out for some shopping today (free food, so I can't complain) and obviously the Volvo dealership is on the list. I'm a proud S60 AWD driver and she has a S80 currently, just looking for something newer. Looks like we're hitting Honda, Subaru, VW (her choice), Volvo, and maybe one or two more. Wish me luck

Prius? Ack! I would have said Passat CC or Legacy 2.5GT..

Either way, I hope she's pleased with the washing machine.
