    Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

I never said drag racing guys made any sense. I mean, they love the shit out of manualized powerglides. Two speeds... Their love of manualized transmissions probably comes from the same place as their love of carbs. Electronics scare them. And getting a transmission to shift right where you...

Drag racing guys like their torque converters because they'd eat clutches.

Here's the procedure for getting to the caliper bracket mounts (also, changing the rotors. And wheel bearings.)

Bad news. Gonna have to suspend this project. Out of time to do it, and costs are mounting. Why? Well, I went to bleed the brakes. Step 1 was making sure all the bleed valves moved. Naturally, I snapped one off straight away. Gonna have to take that caliper off and drill that out. Second...

This may be a problem. It's a removable bracket but parts sourcing on these is a "find the paper book" affair. It's too hefty for me to weld. Also, I can't safely do the air bags in this spot. I'm gonna have to outsource both of those items and the cost is probably going to be formidable.

Notes: Monroe 65409 (rear shocks - perished bushings) - Rockauto $61 Goodyear 578-92-3-309 bellows. Possibly 2B12-309 (rear air springs) - Somewhere? Around $100? Call around for these, they're apparently expensive as hell to ship. Brake pads looked kind of ridiculously beefy. Gotta pull an...

I mean, I had backed them off from 500ftlb (that was a god damned workout) and all it was doing was overcoming the schmutz-in-the-threads torque. Except for one of them.... Where the dingus who installed the wheels last had put the alloy simulator centercap cover offcenter (it clamps in under...

Tires old enough to effing vote. The carcasses on these 2 are 1999 or 1989. The recaps are 2002. On the other side (I did get them off but it was dark so no pics yet), one of them was a different carcass coded 1989 or 1999 with a 1999 retread, and a 1989 or 1999 with no retread. My suspicion...

Drilling out screws is gonna be a theme. Drilling out screws and dulling drill bits on the stainless diamond plate the bastard goes through even more so. I need to buy a drill doctor.

tbh I've never ACTUALLY done a brake fluid change on a road car. Caliper or hose changes leading to bleed operations that exchanged all the fluid, yes. Autocross cars, yes. Race cars, yes. I do (more or less) change Subaru coolant on more or less the schedule because but with the current gen...

You'd think. But most of those occur less frequently than change of ownership, so they'll either never happen or only happen at resellers. Indeed, looking at the Tesloop maintenance records, it seems Tesla service centers agree...

Electric car service is basically going to be plugging in computers, navigating touchscreen menus, much of the same suspension and body mechanics, and autobody. It's similar to regular cars in most ways, but much of the complexity is removed. A handful of additional systems are added, but are...

The MCM swap was way more complicated than it needed to be because they were shoehorning a shit hot turbo motor in. Any random EJ engine is going to kick the crap out of a beetle motor. Problem there is that Subaru swaps typically retain the beetle transmission. There is a manufacturer of...

That's some real dangerzone rule stuff there. I've laid up cars doing RIDICULOUSLY routine stuff because of unforeseen complications.

Holidays 2019 Cross Country Roadtrip Planning

Yeah, if there's western snow forecast, I'm going to divert south to I-10. I'm not fully confident in these tires to be mountain pass ready.

Nominally, cars brought into CA need to be at the emissions certification level they were at when manufactured. The actual chance of being spotted is slim, but if the tech happens to know what the OEM article looks like and the aftermarket one is a different shape, there could be trouble.

Interesting. This might be one of those "Pick one up on the road" kind of deals then. Big remaining must-do items: - Brake bleed (this weekend) - Basic light bulb fixes (this weekend) - Emergency light removal (this weekend) - Tires (getting that taken care of next week hopefully) - Assess air...

The really interesting thing is that I can't find propane on the secondary market either. I mean, the engine is the same gas vs propane, there's just some extra plumbing for propane or multifuel, so it's an easy conversion.

... Working a genset deal. $50. May or may not work. Case of beer to person in Florida for picking it up. Someone else will deliver it, likely for additional beer. Best tire quote is $1500 for Double Coin brand. Next best is $1950 for stuff I'd actually use.
