DIY Smart Mirrors and how to make one

Thought I'd maybe add the list of modules I use myself, as inspiration/basis for anyone lost in all the options. Here goes: Top left: Clock (standard module) Calendar(standard module; uses ICS format links to my private calendars, formerly Google Calendar, now Fastmail, and shows upcoming...

DIY Smart Mirrors and how to make one

Since this topic has sparked some interest in my Tesla PYC thread, I thought I'd make a writeup on it in here. This should cover the bases for most everything involved - what Smart Mirrors are, how they work, and what do you need to get and do to make one of your own. Let's get started. WTF is...

Hm. Sure, I'll make a writeup, if there's interest. Give me an evening or two :)

Ownership Verified: The wait was long enough: leviathan's Tesla Model 3 Performance

Thanks! It's all scratch built, with a de-bezeled used 27" screen from eBay with a VESA wall mount, a Raspberry Pi and a custom-cut pane of spy glass (the most expensive part of the project). I'm still planning to make a proper frame for it some time - for now the glass is literally taped onto...

Ownership Verified: The wait was long enough: leviathan's Tesla Model 3 Performance

So, not much happening during the winter. The car's a reliable daily, recharged 1-2 times a week at work and occasionally at random public chargers whenever I get the chance. Consumption is a bit higher in the cold, as expected - the heater is really power hungry, and so is the drivetrain when...

    Balkan 2020 Roadtrip - Pre-Ringmeet

So far, I'm firmly planning to attend again, with the MX-5. Same as DanRoM, I'm ready to offer help with organisation, with the same restrictions applied :P Doit! NC in the Balkans is awesome, I have no doubts the ND will be even better.

Ownership Verified: Oh no, they've got another one - leviathan's MX-5 NC

Yeah, I didn't expect this myself. Though it hindsight in makes sense - there is no reason for an EV to have a high-power 12V source onboard. The tiny low-rated 12V battery is easily enough to maintain all "normal" electrics it has while being constantly recharged from the DC-DC converter, and...

Ownership Verified: Oh no, they've got another one - leviathan's MX-5 NC

I've gone and ran out of electricity. No, this is not the wrong one of my two PyC threads to post this - the Tesla is perfectly fine :) But the MX-5's battery has decided that sitting for ~3 months without movement is too much effort, and died. Shame on me really for not thinking of this sooner...

The 'I don't like Tesla' Thread

Yeah, that move really doesn't look good in PR for EVs as a whole. In practice, no-one will be paying those prices except people who are clueless. There are multiple charging card providers you can have for free that offer much more humane prices (0,29€-0,39€ per kWh or 7-9€ per full charge...

Fuel? Where we’re going, we won’t need fuel! ==>NooDle’s eGolf

The heater in a Model 3 is stupidly powerful - pre-heating from -5° to comfortable 20° inside within 3-4 minutes. However, it takes a lot of power to run at full blast and chews into the range quite a bit. Tesla themselves recommend using heated seats instead of heating the whole cabin volume...

Fuel? Where we’re going, we won’t need fuel! ==>NooDle’s eGolf

Yeah. There are some basic service tasks that are the same as for ICE cars (brakes, suspension, diffs, exterior/body panel checks, air filters and other stuff that's unchanged), and most of the electric drivetrain and battery stuff is not really serviceable - there's software-based diagnostics...

    Random thoughts.... [Tech Edition]

Swapping the hard drive in a '11 iMac should be fairly easy. Back in those days Apple designed the hardware for user serviceability - I had zero issues doing the same HDD-SSD swap and RAM upgrade in my '09 polycarbonate Macbook a while ago.

    The "New Toys" Thread

So my last proper PC build has been a while... and while I have upgraded pieces over time (cooling, some SSDs, new GPU most recently), the core of this machine has stayed untouched for incredible 10 years. It's done awesome work and has still run current game titles and allowed me to do my work...

    Random thoughts.... [Tech Edition]

Same here. Went for the iPad Air (3rd/current gen, 10.5") over the base 10.2" because of the CPU - the Air sports the iPhone XS/XR-gen A12, whereas the base runs on the older A10 from the iPhone 7. Which is still more than fast enough for day-to-day use, but since I'm likely to keep this thing...

Ownership Verified: The wait was long enough: leviathan's Tesla Model 3 Performance

No, the video editor had a Mavic of his own, and a couple GoPros that he stuck on various cars. I thought about bringing the racing drone, but it would've been a ton of extra hassle, and the area wasn't really large enough to do any interesting flying in the first place.

As promised, here's the video my colleague made about the safety training thing. Warning: it's all in German.

Getting back on topic of the actual car for a moment :) Small update on the current goings on. There's basically two things. Thing one: been to a driver's safety course organized by a coworker for his Tesla Youtube channel viewers and colleagues. Was quite fun, and an interesting comparison to...
