I'd want one, being a special low production run means it won't suffer from the usual crap VW quality.

You forgot the pricetag. If it?s even remotely like the racecar it?s likely to be in the vicinity of a Veyron.

Looking at the picture with the pedals and shifter, it looks like it has a racing sequential transmission ... so, at this point it does indeed seem to be remotely like the racecar.

Which one would I have? Neither. The Raptor is already turning into a cock mobile, and I can see the Tourag becoming one too.

I'd probably take the Raptor, I think it'd be more usable daily.

That being said, this is very cool.

If they put this into production, they will probably have to pay Hammond some sort of royalty fee, considering he did design it in one night :D

I think this was mentioned elsewhere, but the North American meaning of an SUV is different. Traditional body-on-frame and unibodies are considered SUVs. We use the terms offroader and softroader to refer to their prowess off road.
Ah, because in Germany cars like a Mercedes G or Toyota Landcruiser don?t usually fall under the same definition as an ML or a Touareg.

Well I was referring mainly to the handmade spaceframe and carbon fiber bodywork. But yeah, apart from the badge pretty much everything including the drivetrain on the race touareg consists of highly specialised, really really expensive parts.

^ I think even the Bowler Nemesis (which isn't cheap) only comes with a standard manual transmission. I wonder how easy it is to use a dog engagement gearbox in day-to-day driving?

You know what VW should do - Sell the actual race versions with a pit crew, training, etc, so that people can just buy a complete package and race in dakar.

Do you really think that not being able to buy a Race Touareg is going to stop them? They want to do stuff like Porsche cup where there are hotels, gridgirls, and champagne. I think the Dakar is one of the few races left that is just too hardcore for those sorts of people. And if they?re willing to fork over the money, sleep in a tent for 2 weeks, and endure all the other stresses of the rally, then by all means I think they should do it.

You can actually get full packages like that from KTM if I remember correctly. There are actually quite a few wealthy people driving on the same material as the guys fighting for first place, but they remain well at the back.

Don't forget pretty much every other Rally Raid and the La Carrera Panamericana,

You know that could be what these are minus the crew and all. Plenty of manufacturers have a history of make "road going" versions of their race cars (especially rally cars) with the intent that they be used as rally cars by privateers. Most were sold at high prices and advertised as being low production run special editions (at least in subaru's case)

Didn't the old Isuzu Vehicross have a 'rally-raid' persona?

That did well....

I'll take the more practical, if a bit less cool Raptor.

The problem with the Vehicross is that it is a tiny SUV from a dying brand. No one wanted a small SUV with shit visibility and interior space, and they certainly didn't want it from Isuzu.

Can you imagine Rod Stewart doing the Paris-Dakar? "I am sailing, I AM SAILING, thrue the Dunes, in my Touareg..."

I said this on another forum but I'll say it here as well:

VW please do NOT put this into production as a road legal vehicle.

This car will only be purchased by the same rich, douchebags who drive Hummer H1s in suburban shopping mall parking lots and never see any real offroad duties. The internet folks who salivate and claim they will use this car for it's intended purpose will likely never own or be able to afford one.

The only ones who can and will buy them will misuse them are retard status symbols I mention above.

And those who can afford AND do serious offroad racing will *gasp* buy a non-road legal proper race spec version of the Dakar racer. Because they have the sense and money to know when they want a road car, they want a normal, proper, comfortable road car once they get their crazy desert racing out of their system.

You can say that about any supercar. It has to exist for us to be able to lust after it.

Blowing this out of proportion, no?

Yeah, those cars that my Dad always goes "no one will ever take those off road, it'd be too expensive to fix it," after which I show him pictures of those cars being flogged in the dirt and mud.

I knew you would pull out 'the supercar arguement' but sorry, its not comparable. Most supercars are still made as roadcars, and thus serve part of their purpose. I will not discuss this any further beyond that. I'm done.

Blowing this out of proportion, no?

To answer your question 'no I am not' :)
