I currently have a 2008 whitebook.Being shiny it screams "STEAL ME" as if I do go to this college I will be getting bus or train. All the above laptops have no internal disc drive, which makes them thinner, and easier to stuff in a bag with lots of other things. I am basically after a machine which I can damage or lose, i'd be upset but I wouldn't be as badly out of pocket as I would with the Mac.

I've been in college much longer than i'd like to admit and have used Macs most of the time (Pismo/iBook/Whitebook) - you should cut down on the paranoia, none none of them have been stolen. (And i don't even use a Kensington lock).

IF you really think you need a cheap "throwaway" laptop, get a ten-inch Acer netbook. They are dead cheap, reasonably fast, small but big enough to fit a decent-size keyboard.

If you plan on getting a 13+-inch laptop you have to invest too much money to fit in your "not too bad if it gets stolen"-criteria.

Not having a HDD will not make a netbook slimmer, by the way, as most of them (for example the Acer you linked) are available with both a SSD and a traditional harddisk, thus are designed to fit one anyways.

EDIT: No, i've not been in college since the Pismo came out - i got one used as my first Mac sometime in the early naughts.

I can see where your coming from but im only co-owner of the Mac

After using 13" and 12" (Macbook and iBook respectively.) I don't think i could go back to ten, and I would like to fill it up with music and videos for some entertainemnt should the situation arise.

A used/refurbished Whitebook/iBook it is, then.

OR a Thinkpad.
