Default External HDDs start up when switching user

Everytime I want to switch between users my WD 500GB MyBook always starts spooling up like I want to access it. It's not going to kill me but it is annoying waiting for it to spool up and then I can change the user. But switching back from the other user to mine it doesnt have the problem even when the HDD is resting.

Please advise on what to do.

I have no idea what a swapfile is, how do I check if it is on?

A swapfiles are synonymous with pagefiles and virtual memory. They are used to store information for applications that are currently running (ie the webpage you are currently viewing) as an alternative to your computer's RAM.

If you have XP, this is how to check for pagefiles (as I prefer to call them).

1. Open the control panel and make sure you switch to "classic view" if you aren't in it already.
2. Open the System icon.
3. Go to the Advanced tab and select Settings under Performance.
4. Click the Change button.
5. Do you see the external drives listed? If so, select them and make sure the radio button for "No paging file" is activated.

I'm not sure if this is the solution to your problem, but give it a try. And if you're not on XP, well, shame on you for submitting to Vista. images/smilies/tongue.gif
