Default Hard drive failure?

My sister called me up yesterday to say that her Thinkpad X31 wasn't working anymore. She said that she heard a grinding sort of noise and then the computer froze. Now, everytime she tries to start it up it says "operating system not found" and "mediatest failure".

Is the internal hard drive kaput? And if it is, where can I find a hard drive to specifically fit inside the X31?

Hmm, that does sound like a hard drive crash I'm afraid. Obviously the first thing to do is try reinstalling the OS, but a grinding noise is never good news.

Any 2.5" drive would fit, I googled and it uses 2.5" SATA-150 drives. I've never heard of a laptop using special drives to be honest, but now manufacturers might start putting solid-state drives in the very top end laptops.

Matt

Most laptops use 2.5" drives, you'd need to check whether it's an IDE or SATA connection but you're looking at this sort of thing: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...d=14&subid=896

Some IBM tablets use annoyingly expensive 1.8" drives, but they're pretty rare.
