My dad has an existing manual backup that's the result of multiple computers. He now wants some software to check for duplicates on the backup hard drive, although I personally think he just shouldn't bother.
The more important thing though is he needs some sync software so he can plug in his external hard drive and then sync a folder between two PCs and his external hard drive (i.e. changes on other PC get made to the hard drive and then the other PC). Anyone know of any such software? I'd tell him to use online services like Dropbox, but they are very limited in space.

Acronis trueimage without a doubt. I use it at home and it is used for imaging new computers at work. Very easy to use and completely faultless. Cheap too, you can aquire a bootdisk from somewhere on the internet and that's all you need to backup.
As for syncing, XP pro has that feature built in to allow people to sync back and forth to their laptops and the like. Can't remember what it's called though. Acronis may also have this feature. Last edited by matt2000; December 7th, 2008 at 1:06 AM. |

His girlfriend/fiance's computer may be Vista, I'm not sure. His current PC uses Windows ME, but I'm going to eventually swap that POS out for an unused XP PC (it was my old-old one and my youngest sister's PC after that).
We can ignore his ME PC, but we can't ignore it having to work with Vista.
