Default No porno for you!!

Some friends of mine want to limit their 11yo. sons porn access, and they asked me for help. So.. Are there any good (free) parental control programs that you guys can recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Tell your friends to do their jobs as parents properly. Technology cannot do it for them. Any software that claims to do so is lying as they are laughably trivial to defeat.

If they need to revoke and/or supervise all privileges to computer usage, then so be it.

Also, the way you posed this question was quite funny:
Quote:
Some friends of mine want to limit their 11yo. sons porn access,
So, by only limiting and not banning access, they still want to allow him some porn viewing? images/smilies/lol.gif

I'll assume you just didn't chose your words carefully and that's not what you actually meant.

Sorry I kind of agree, if they want to see Range Rovers and strange men then they will find a way - but if you must have something Net Nanny is as good as you can get I suppose.

You are pitting the work of some programmer against the combined curiosity and hormonal drives of a near-teen?

Yeah, good luck with that. A quick Google search will teach the kid everything he needs to know to get around any net nanny program.

I've heard the parental controls features of Mac OS X Leopard works nicely, but it won't work if you are using Windows obviously !

I think an 11 year old can do without the internet for a few more years, it'll only infect his brain.

don't shoot the messenger... Me personally, I believe in unlimited porn access for everyone...

there is of course a way around everything but if it will make his mother sleep a bit better I'm not gonna stand in her way. I might even show the kid how to turn it of if he can keep the secret...

I actually have experience with this personally. When I first got on the web, strangely at the same age of 11, I had my own computer but my parents installed Net Nanny on it - it was kinda of a deal we made because I wanted to get on the internet so badly.

I got deterred for a while by the rather sinister silouhette of the nanny pulling the plug which showed up when I attempted to view pornography. But soon enough, I found the courage to just go ahead and reformat my computer. Maybe there are easier ways of getting around it, but I just reformatted.

I don't blame my parents for doing what they did... I'd much rather have my own computer with a porn blocking program than having to use the computer in the den or family room like a lot of kids are forced to do these days.

Tell them to get Net Nanny and give it a try. I don't think it's particularly easy to get around without the password. I had my own computer so I reformatted and made it look like it did before. You can't do this with a family computer for obvious reasons.

Edit: Come to think of it, my parents never offered to turn it off as I progressed through my teens and early adulthood. I guess they must have just expected that I got rid of it right away. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Another solution: set the PC to use OpenDNS and enable their adult filtering. I dunno how good their filters are as I have them off, but unless the kid knows how to access the PC's DNS settings, he's SOL. Or even better -- set up the DNS on the router like I do. images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks for all the replies, I will install net nanny and we'll see how it goes... I think it has more of a symbolic value than anything else.

Yeah, as you say it's more about peace of mind as nothing can control the raging hormones of a teen... but $50 or $60 is a small amount for peace of mind.

And I don't think my parents view me in such an innocent way avanti. images/smilies/tongue.gif

That's the first thing I thought.

Anyhow, I agree. It's time to get tough as there is nothing that's going to prevent him from getting to it. I would make sure the computer is in a high traffic and visible area. Have a talk with him and and if he still tries to look at it make sure he can't get on the internet period.

Do what Viper said. My dad was an IT guy back when I was younger and he did just that. Took me forever to figure out how to get around it. But as was said earlier, there is little that can defeat a hormonal 12 year old.

the computer is in his room, where it is remaining. but we have all been young, whether it was porn mags, porn videos or porn surfing, we always found a way to hide it from our parents. I don't even think it is a problem now, and when it eventually is he is "too" old to "restrain" anyways..

edit, yeah, will give opendns a try too!
