Ok, I've had a problem with my computer the last week or so.
I had suddenly shut off, just like a power outtage, but the rest of my stuff (monitor, speakers etc.) still worked... Since it runs just fine for the most part (happened only twice, and my pc is almost always on), i don't suspect the hardware to be wrong, or am I mistaken? Then again, I've never had any troubles with Ubuntu so far, and I doesn't seem like a normal crash, it's not freezing up or anything, just power cuts out instantly. Help? |

Sounds like CPU or PSU problems. Have you checked temperatures? Are all the fans running? How old is the PSU?

Sensors seem not to be working under linux, say 30°...
Well, all the fans are running, at least right now. Air coming from the PSU seems quite warm, yet I don't have any idea if thats really too warm or not. PSU is probably a year or two old. |

My first suspect would be the power supply, second would be the mother board. Especially if all your temps are in line. If you really want to test the power supply you can buy a good tester for about $20. Other wise you're going to have to replace it to see if the problem persists.

Fixed it
![]() It was indeed the cpu heating up. The first sensor program I tried it with didn't work, so after I found one that did work, temperatures were around 75°C for normal stuff, and when I tried to use all the processing power, temperatures climbed to over 100°C in a couple of minutes, and then it shut off again, which proved that theory. So I opened the case to see whats what. Fans were all running, as mentioned earlier. Took the fan and the cooler of the cpu, and the thermal grease looked kind of wonky. So I went to the next computer store, bought some grease and tada, runs like new. Normal temperatures around 35°C, never hit more than 55°C during testing. All is fine ![]() Never thought it would make such a big difference though. Thanks for all your help. |

Yeah, good to hear that the problem doesn't persist any longer, and that we pointed to the right directions.
