Default Sound issue

I've been having quite a strange issue lately with my computer and sound.

It started when I recently bought a brand new video card, a GeForce 8600GT dualslot card. I installed it and it worked great, however ever since the install my soundcard has not been functioning. I've tried everything, reinstalling of drivers, checking to see if it was my speakers or anything else. All I get is a weird static over what ever sound device I'm using. I had to go out and buy a pair of USB Headphones just to listen to music (they work, which confuses me even more). The computer still recognizes the card, too. So its not as if its not installed or anything.

Ideas? Help?

Any and all help will be greeted as liberators.

Love,
Whappeh

Uh, you probably have a bad sound card. What brand/model is it? Or is it integrated?

Oh, and did you get an 8800GT? images/smilies/tongue.gif

This is pretty common, actually. Caused by the sound card and video card fighting for priority. First thing to try is uninstall all the sound card software and put the card in another slot then, install your software. Sometimes, you don't even need to move the card, just pop it back in the same slot.

Yes, I did get an 8800. Typing too fast and not thinking enough. I don't think its a bad soundcard, as it was working for nearly a year and a half before this happened.

I'll give this a try. Thanks for the advice. I'll rebump if I have any more issues or if that doesn't work.

I've had soundcards just up and a die on me randomly before, so its not unheard of.

Bumping this thread:

I pulled the card out of the slot and reinserted it. Didn't do anything.

I uninstalled all the drivers and the device, reinstalled everything and I am now getting this:

Any ideas?

Did you install all of appropriate software? It looks like the mixer software isn't installed there.

Try uninstalling (again, sorry) and download the latest version from creative's website.

I literally just installed the 34.9mb file from that link before I took that screenshot from a total driver and device uninstall.

I've seen instances where Creative cards just seem to pack up like that, only option is use onboard or buy a new card. Try testing that slot on your motherboard with some other device, to make sure it's not the motherboard.

If all the software is installed, it's usually the card itself, though. You don't happen to have an nForce chipset, do you? Those are reported to have more issues with Creative cards.

I'm running an Alienware, and it does have the nVidia nForce 4 chipset.

For now my Rocketfish USB headsets work, so I'll live with the pain and just get a new card... hopefully some good deals come on Black Friday.

I'll plus rep you for the post you just made when I can again. images/smilies/love.gif

Ah, I remember the nForce4 chipset, I avoided that one entirely due to the whole compatibility problem between GeForce cards and Creative cards.. it was a huge mess. Thought they would have fixed those issues with the 8-series cards.

Seems silly to sell people stuff that would conflict, but my box is a couple years old, and I've done some mixmatching to try to keep it more up to date. It may be time for a new computer, but woe unto me, anything I'd actually need is out of my price range... even if I build this time.

The nForce 4 was the first nVidia chipset with PCI-E, they made a bit of a hash of it by trying to rush it to market. Don't blame yourself for its shortcomings.

Try using Driver Cleaner to uninstall the video card's driver completely, then install the latest driver, then install the sound card on top of that.
