AMD is planning to split itself into two companies. My guess is they will sell the manufacturing part later on. I guess this is the end of mainstream AMD CPUs, they'll probably become another VIA (or Nvidia) producing CPU for niche market and GPUs.

Well, good news for consumers...

Intel slashes chip prices up to 31%
Sharon Gaudin
July 21, 2008

Intel Corp. yesterday announced that it has dropped the price of seven processors by up to 31%.

There were three price cuts in Intel's Core 2 Duo chip family. The 3.16-GHz Core 2 Duo E8500 was reduced from $266 to $183 as of July 20. That 31% drop greatly outpaced all the other cuts, which ranged from 11% to 15%, according to an Intel price list.

The price of the Core 2 Duo 2.53-GHz E2700 chip was cut by 15% cut to $113, and the 3-GHz E8400 by 11% to $163. In addition, the price tag for the company's Core 2 Q6600 2.4-GHz quad processor was reduced from $224 to $193, a 14% drop.

Three cuts also came in the Xeon server processor family, with prices of both the X3220 and the X3210 reduced by 12%. The price of the E3110 dropped by 11%.

In April, Intel had slashed the prices on about a dozen of its processors up to 50%.

Dan Olds, principal analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group, said that Intel is simply trying to keep its product moving out the door and that cutting prices periodically is a good way to do that.

"These chips will eventually go away in the next few quarters or even in a few years in some cases, but Intel wants to keep them moving out the door right up until they're discontinued," he added. "They're going to be bringing out new designs. Then they've got to look at their older stuff. The new stuff is faster and better, so you have to cut prices on the old stuff to keep it moving."
Looks like they really are being aggressive given AMD's position now... So do you'll think it might be a good time to buy a new processor say within a month or would the prices drop even more at the end of the year?

I've got an AMD chip in my PC. I built it about 4 years ago now. Its very outdated, and if I ever get a new computer I won't even consider AMDs. They really have shot downhill.

And also look at how the AMD/ATI partnership has gone. More recently nVidia has shot out into the lead as well!

I still recommend AMD Sempron chips for low-end systems. They cost around $30-$40 on Newegg and do the job.

I've been an Nvidia fan for years and I would strongly disagree with that, I think ATi is handing Nvidia its ass right now.

maybe amd can try and at least catch up to intel w/ Deneb. or whatever AMD has in the future for their cpu/motherboards. I really wanted to go AMD, but they forced me to go intel. it just didn't make sense for me to build a system w/ AMD and i can build an intel system for around the same price that's much faster in games. >_<

Now THAT would save AMD! A team of superheroes, whose power is distilled into quad-core processors!

I'll write the script, you get the cast. I'd suggest Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey, Jack Black and Morgan Freeman for the voices of each of the four cores, and Shia LaBeouf to be an annoying guy who dies.

Let's fast-track this sucker.
