AOL query?

Hi,

I'm thinking of migrating from shoddy Tiscali soon. But in my area only a few ISP's work. My exchange supports 8Mb. Tiscali can only give me 512. AOL caught my eye. I want 1Mb connection at a decent price. But one thing worries me, I recently went to a friends house where he has AOL, and I noticed that they was using some Internet/E-mail program that AOL supplied.

But I don't want to use their tat. I want to use my Zoom X5 router and (XP) Firefox, Thunderbird, (Mac) Safari, Mail. Can I do that???

dont go AOL, something else but not AOL and go for more than 1Mbit, 2Mbit is very cheap.

Apparently, surprisingly, and disgustingly....no. AOL locks you into all of their crap.

No matter cheap or enticing it is, do not sign up with AOL. For your own good and safety run far, far, far away and never think of it again. Erase "AOL" from your vocabulary. Find a small animal and burn it to atone for your sin of even uttering "AOL". Slit your wrists if you ever find yourself thinking of going to AOL.

Just don't. Please.

I would rather shoot myself in the face than use AOL, in fact my friends have a pact that if any one of us signs up for AOL the others agree to kill him for his own good and bury his body in the desert - after which we will never speak his name again.

But, hey, have fun with that; once you are in there is almost no getting out. There have been many cases of people trying to cancel the AOL accounts and AOL simply refuses to do it. In one case the son of a customer called to cancel the AOL account of his father, because he passed away. AOL actually demanded a copy of the death certificate!

Thank you for doing business with AOL, the customers check in but they can't check out. Kind of like the Hotel California that way.

No AOL. BAD. tho I have an old AOL 3.0 Floppy i wanna see if i can still get service on it. And a nokia 100 cellular phone

What version AOL? An AOL 1.0 floppy just went for thousands at auction.

I'd rather swallow a shotgun than use AOL again. After all, it rhymes with those two most evil things: Hell and Dell.

Seriously, AOL is total rubbish. The 100 million people who still use it need to get a brain.
