Default Apple Boot Camp: Apple-made app to run Windows XP

This is not a hack, it's official Apple sofware to dual-boot Windows XP on Intel Mac. Nice! images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Yeah, I just saw a thing on CNN about this when they were discussing Apple profit predictions for this year.

Had never heard of it before then.

Seems logical enough, but I thought there would be some kind of Microsoft rule to stop this.

People are saying that the new OSX 10.4 - Kitten, Pussy or something will have some feature that will remove the need of rebooting images/smilies/eek.gif

But rebooting is engrained in MS Window's OS functionality.

If we can't reboot, we cannot run windows due to its crashes.

10.5 Leopard, likely will have virtualization software. It's basically VMware (if you've ever used that) but will be integrated into the OS and take advantage of new Intel technology to make it almost native speeds.

All this does though is allow you to install and run Windows on a Mac, just as if it were a PC (since deep down it's all the same now). Therefore anything that runs on a windows will run in windows on a mac. You will have to put up with windows itself, to get that, but it now allows people to play video games and such on iMacs and MacBooks.

This is really good news for Microsoft, since now ANYONE who buys a computer, can run Windows. They now have the choice they never had when Apple was running PowerPC hardware. Why would Microsoft want to stop that? It's more people they can sell their crappy OS to.

This could be bad news for Microsoft. Assuming that this dual OS compatibility dramatically increases the sales of Apple's computers, there will be a larger user base of Apples's OSX, which means more developer support for Apple's operating system. Apple can then develop a OS that runs on both PC's and Macs to compete with Microsoft.

Yeah eventually, but right now its more copies of windows that they can sell. It's all likely to change anyway with the release of Leopard (as it's rumored to include virtualization software, like VMWare) in the OS itself.

nah, Apple already announced no virtualization from them (at least in the foreseeable future)

virtualization is kind of ridiculous anyway, as it will inherently have a performance hit, and with as easy/quick as it is to reboot, why not? personally, i would like to see a boot system that would allow hibernation/deep sleep of either OS while you run the second, with a partition to copy files, etc. VMWare is simply a new(er) "VirtualPC" type deal, except now no PPC ==> x86 translation is needed (ie, it is one OS running inside another OS).... i want to OS's running apart from each other, yet "simultaneously"

virtualization done correctly though is VERY good... I have had the good fortune of being able to use VMware at work, and they have the virtualization of OSes almost perfected, as I can run multiple machines, in multiple operating systems, on one machine, with no noticeable performance degradation on any of the machines.

gamers still won't make the switch though. both the imac and mac mini don't even have agp/pci-e expansion. one will be stuck with a radeon x1600 at best on the imac. which is not a bad card, but not quite hardcore either.

There are more computer users than just gamers. Many environments a mac would be perfect for, but have been previously limited because they couldn't run specific applications.

I dont see this as something bad for Microsoft seeming Apple caters to the premium computer market. Microsoft caters to everyone who doesnt mind Windows-based problems. images/smilies/wink.gif
