Rep Power: 18 ![]() ![]() | I'm surprised no one's talking about this sub-1 kilogram and sub-$500 PC laptop. I'm thinking of recommending this to our GM and to my cheapskate friend. So anyone getting or has one? So anyone getting or has one? |

I think it would also make for a good PC for those who are "computerly-retarded" who just need a cheap, small, portable thing for surfing the web and checking email, as long as they can bare with the small screen and keyboard. |

| Lexus? Oh shi- | I think laptops like this are just too tiny. I mean it's nice to have something so light but you don't need to get something with a 7" screen. I have a 15.4" MacBook Pro and that is light enough that I carry it around uni all day with no problems. If something like mine is too heavy then you can go for something with a 13" screen or something that's very light. But something with a 7" screen would be pretty much useless for someone like me - what can you see if it's that small? |

| I think it's cool for a bit of a laugh, the person who has every new gadget, but I wouldn't consider it a serious machine.

| is awesome! | I can't really think of anything I do on my current lappy that this thing doesn't do. Maybe the data backup of /mydocs between lappy and my gamer, but that's it. And once I get my linux box up and running fine with autosync that wont even be needed. Now, having said that. I have a 15.4" screen. It feels small. No way I'm going to 7"....

| Global Moderator | Yup, 7" is just too small to display anything at all really, especially internets. So you have something that is too small to be a serious laptop, and too large and to be real portable like a PDA. So you end up with what the Eee is, a useless stuck in the middle compromise that excels at nothing. |

| Lexus? Oh shi- | 7" is bad enough... but can you say 800x480? That's like what PocketPCs are at now for Oliver's sake. |

| .sa = bad driver! | I'm waiting to see how they price the 10" 1280x800 model. I think a lot of you are underestimating it, though. It's x86-based, which means the software library available to it is far bigger than any PDA's, and a real keyboard beats a touchpad/onscreen keyboard any day of the week. I do have to say I liked it a lot more when they said it'd be $199, however. ![]()

| Lexus? Oh shi- | ^ True, there's a lot more x86 apps than there are for PocketPC or Palm or the like. But what good is Photoshop on a 7" screen? |

| Who uses Photoshop on a portable? I thought the real professionals used desktops connected to calibrated CRT monitors with specific color profiles, etc. | |

There are a lot of tricks you can do to make web surfing work better on a small screen. It's cheap, 300 euros for the 4gb hd model (and it will probably get cheaper). It also has a SD card slot, and (some other memory one i forgot about) you could add a few gigs if 4 gig is on the small size. Emails, a bit of chatting maybe even a movie or two if the crap celeron can handle it. And thats what most people do with their pc's. At my old job i used to sell the Asus R2h, that was a small tablet pc with the same cpu. With a bit more ram that was a fun little machine ![]() I might be getting one for christmas/bday And as a last point, just look at it ![]() ![]() | |

Rep Power: 18 ![]() ![]() | Ive been living with an Eee PC since mid-January as I was computer-less since mid-December. For 400 usd it's a bargain to own. Its barely a kilogram. It can survive drops like a celphone and it is surprisingly fast for the specs. But my suffering this laptop will soon be over as I ordered the recently updated Penryn-based Macbook Pros for 1844 usd after mail-in rebate. A good discount of 275 usd. I just have to wait for Amazon to get stoccks. ![]() |

| D: | They're all the rage at uni, people just want to be able to take notes and it's a good easy keyboard and not too pricey

As a extra pc to have around the house I think i've still made the right decision. I'd never be able to use it as a main PC though. In terms of portability it's a true winner. I take it everywhere. And it doesn't mind getting dropped a few times :> |

Rep Power: 26 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Damn, that sucks. I was hoping to get the 8.9in model when it comes out so I can have more screen "real estate", but still, it'll have a faster Core 2 Solo cpu, that should be worth the wait.
