Default batch renaming files

I have many files that I want to rename and doing them 1 by 1 is not exactly comfortable. What I need is some free application that would rename it for me whichever the format file is. Also I need it to have some kind of counter coz I want files to start 1,2,3 etc. Can anybody help?

If you're using windows xp just select all of the files, press F2 to rename and name the file something (1). it then renames all the files like:
something (2)
something (3)
something (4)
something (5)
etc...

"something" is the name you want to give, not a command.

No problem. Once you get the hand of it, it's actually pretty easy images/smilies/smile.gif
