An Important Message from
Best Buy for HD DVD Player Owners

For months, there has been much debate surrounding the two competing high-definition video formats: Toshiba's HD DVD and Sony's Blu-ray Disc. Recently, Toshiba announced that they will no longer produce HD DVD players, and movie studios have decided not to release new titles in the HD DVD format.

Exciting news if you bought your HD DVD player from Best Buy
As the owner of an HD DVD player, you may have concerns about these developments. At Best Buy, we are dedicated to making sure you always have the right technology for you. That's why we're offering you a complimentary $50 Best Buy gift card for each HD DVD player you purchased from Best Buy before February 23, 2008. (See details and qualifying models.) Use the gift card to treat yourself to anything you want in our stores or online. Most qualifying customers will automatically receive their complimentary gift card by mail in the coming weeks. If you qualify and haven't received yours by May 1, 2008, please call us at 1-888-BEST-BUY to verify your eligibility (have your receipt handy, if possible).

Good news (even if you didn't buy from us)
Be assured that your HD DVD player will continue to play existing HD DVD titles (and upconvert standard DVDs to near-HD quality) as it always has. If you purchased a Best Buy service plan with your HD DVD player, we will continue to honor it for the life of the plan. If, however, you wish to trade in your HD DVD player and HD DVDs, we offer a convenient way to do so via our Best Buy Trade-In Center. Beginning March 21, visit BestBuyTradeIn.com to get an instant estimate of the value of your HD DVD player and movies. See below for further information, along with additional resources that we hope you'll find helpful as you examine your options.

That's cool if you bought one a while ago, but I also like the fact that circuit city has extended their return policy on hd dvd players to 90 days allowing anyone who recently purchased one to return it and get a blueray player.

Yeah, Best Buy is just trying to avoid having to take the whole thing back from users.

You can't return it if you cut out the UPC on the box (for the five free after rebate HD-DVD discs). $50 doesn't sound like much but you still get the gift card even if you already sold your HD-DVD player.

Yeah it's not bad considering the free movies came attached with the player, you can still get some money back through eBay/craigslist

True, but there are some killer deals that can only be had at B&M stores, Best Buy included.

Best Buy Trade-in Center HD DVD prices posted

So what's your remnant of a format war gone by worth? Best Buy has updated its Trade-In Center website with prices for HD DVD players and movies, and quite frankly you're probably better off just keeping it. Prices for players are highest for combo players, like the BH-200 ($285*) and BD-UP5000 ($255), then for players equipped with high end scalers for DVD upconverting like the HD-XA2 ($165) then everything else like the Xbox 360 add-on ($21) or HD-A3 ($36). Movies (along with a player, not by themselves) net less than $3 each. Of course, there's always value in a fresh start so go ahead and check it out for yourself.

*All prices assume excellent condition with all cables & manuals

That's gay. 11 of my movies were free, so I'd rather keep them then give them away to Best Buy for $33 bucks.

Got mine yesterday as well. Considering I sold the player a long time ago (before it was obvious HDDVD was going to lose), and made a decent amount from that, this extra is nice.
