Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I'd give Avira's free AV a try: http://www.free-av.com/ Avira's AntiVir premium version is very damn good & from all reports I've seen their freebie AV is very good. Cheers. |

| I've tried Avast and AVG. I much prefer Avast as AVG didn't detect a lot and seemed to be a bit of a resource whore.

Car: 2008 VW GTI Rep Power: 8 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Solution: Buy a mac. No but seriously I use AVG on my xp half of my mac and have had no problems. But I cant exactly comment on the resource bit, I have a Mac Pro so in windows speed isnt really an issue. |

Macs are not that much more secure than a modern Windows box. Linux, *BSDs, Macs, and Windows all have security issues, and are vulnerable at some level. Also there are legitimate reasons to use Windows, for many here it is probably games. Ok, I've done my rant/procrastination activity, time to go back to school work. | I thought this thread was about free anti-virus programs, not horrendously overpriced ones. ![]()

I really like AVG and hated Avast!. Avast was better than Norton or McCrapee but Avast's GUI didn't make sense, you couldn't tell what it was doing at any given moment and it was a pain to shut down. AVG is easy to shut down when you want/need it out of the way (Try that with Norton!), its footprint is fairly small, detection seems to be good, updates are issued very often (multiple times daily if needed), and it's easy to use. There are other free antivirus programs out there but I haven't used them or don't know much about them. AVG gets my vote. |

| I just installed AVG and it looks good to me. However, whenever it updates it always shows a popup box. Anyway to have it update silently in the background? | |
