I'd give Avira's free AV a try: http://www.free-av.com/

Avira's AntiVir premium version is very damn good & from all reports I've seen their freebie AV is very good.

Cheers.

I've tried Avast and AVG. I much prefer Avast as AVG didn't detect a lot and seemed to be a bit of a resource whore.

Solution: Buy a mac. No but seriously I use AVG on my xp half of my mac and have had no problems. But I cant exactly comment on the resource bit, I have a Mac Pro so in windows speed isnt really an issue.

I'm a Mac user and I hate when fan boys give that answer, even in jest (it has been spammed too many times over the tubes). Macs are not that much more secure than a modern Windows box. Linux, *BSDs, Macs, and Windows all have security issues, and are vulnerable at some level.

Also there are legitimate reasons to use Windows, for many here it is probably games.

Ok, I've done my rant/procrastination activity, time to go back to school work.

I currently use AVG on two personal computers (and oversee it on several family members' computers) and have tried Avast! in the past. I really like AVG and hated Avast!. Avast was better than Norton or McCrapee but Avast's GUI didn't make sense, you couldn't tell what it was doing at any given moment and it was a pain to shut down. AVG is easy to shut down when you want/need it out of the way (Try that with Norton!), its footprint is fairly small, detection seems to be good, updates are issued very often (multiple times daily if needed), and it's easy to use.

There are other free antivirus programs out there but I haven't used them or don't know much about them. AVG gets my vote.

This just runs in the background, silently updating, etc. I don't really care about the UI except for the "virus found" screen which will hopefully never be seen.

I don't remember how "silent" Avast runs, but AVG updates automatically without any problems. I highly recommend it for someone who may not know too much about computers.

AVG here too, been using for over 4 years with no blips on the radar. Teamed with Zone alarm and regaular checks at GRC.com's shields up! I've had no virus or hacks.

I just installed AVG and it looks good to me. However, whenever it updates it always shows a popup box. Anyway to have it update silently in the background?

^ With the free version, I don't think so, but you can always set it to update at a time when no one is ever using the computer.
