Dispenses buckshot medication for all undead patients.
|
Ok, for Christmas my family upgraded my old 3rd generation iPod to a band new 80gb iPod Video. I love my iPod, but I bloody hate the new iTunes (7.*) with is required to manage the newest iPod. It's a memory hog, it crashes my system, it starts 3 processes every time it runs, it maxes out my CPU and never drops the usage back to normal while only performing basic functions and I'm not gonna take it any more!
Here is what I need from you, Final Gear Tech Minions. I need a line on a third party program that will manage my iPod. Managing play lists is a must, but I would also like something to manage album art and videos, as well as convert videos to the iPod's format. I know a google search will turn up all kinds of stuff, but I would like to hear first hand accounts from those who have used these programs - I want to hear what you loved, what you hated, what was annoying but livable, that sort of thing. Help me out here, fellas. iTunes is a pig of a program and one of the worst examples of system resource management I have EVER seen and it's time has come to go away and be banished from my system. Everything was nice an dandy until I upgraded to iTunes 7.*, now my system runs like it's in the special Olympics. EDIT: I just decided that they should rename iTunes to iDiot because it makes my computer run like it's retarded. No, that's an insult to retarded people everywhere. In other news I understand they are going to sue for the rights to iBM, one of Apples iToilet applications.

I used to have an Ipod (before it fuked up!), I like iTunes for just a music player on my desktop, love the simplicity and ease of use etc. Dont have any experience with the new version and ipod management.#
I use sonicstage for my sony hdd player, Im not sure ifs that just for sony or not. Easy to use on the sony, not sure about apple. Worth checking it out though! |

Sony and Apple are both into proprietary stuff, I really doubt it would work. To work with iPod it pretty much has to be purpose built because no other MP3 player shares the iPod's file structure and menu tree.

I remember SL saying that Anapod Explorer is really good for iPod management.
I haven't personally tried it since I sold my 30GB iPod video almost as soon as I got it

No, I'm not an iPod owner myself. I've heard good comments about both, though.

If its just the new iTunes you could downgrade to an older version, I agree with all your points about what it does to your system, its the same with mine.

I used to actually buy songs from the iTunes store, but since the last time I reformatted, I didn't feel like installing that resource hog again.

Actually, I can't. The 80 Gb iPod Video requires iTunes 7 or higher. I had already gone from 7 back to 6.

You'll have to use Anapod. I think it's the only software other than iTunes that will transfer video. The newest version of Winamp supports the iPod, but only for music. Anapod should handle everything: music, movies, and photos. iTunes will only convert .mov videos to .mp4 (iPod format). You will have to use other software to convert any other type of video to .mp4 (I like Xilisoft). I would just stick to iTunes, it runs fine on my machine (which coincidentally is down at the moment
)

Dude, Winamp. Support is built in v5.2+.

I didn't think WinAmp would support the iPod, I will have to look into that. My friend has a Nano and uses WinAmp but still uses iTunes to manage the music on the Pod.

I tried using Winamp with my iPod video before I sold it, but all I could do was add songs. It wouldn't let me actually "manage" it (I couldn't see and delete songs, etc.) Maybe Winamp iPod support has gotten better since then though (this was about half a year ago).
Winamp still rocks as a music player, but I think there are way better iPod tools out there, such as Anapod.

I'm a bit late, I realise. But Anapod was the best third party software I found (as well as their version for the Zen, both of which I actually have legit licenses for!).
But I now just use iTunes. On my Mac, the reasoning behind that is probably obvious - iTunes is great on here. And as I never use Windows anymore... However, back in the days I did (a few months back) Anapod was my weapon of choice. Hope that helps.

French though, so gotta treat her rough to keep her happy. 1989 Toyota MR2 Mk1 - owned it for two years. Love it loads. Currently undergoing a suspension upgrade... 1987 Toyota MR2 Mk1 SC - A project car that had Headgasket issues when I bought it. I've never driven it... yet... |

Greatly, It seems like Anapod has the most support from people with hands-on experience with it.
Much thanks.

My sister's MP3 player just works exactly as a portable hard drive. Just drop the files in a folder anywhere on the thing, then browse to it and hit play. It's basically a small PC and totally sweet.
