Default Broadband Speeds

Just out of interest what broadband speeds does everone recieve.
I'm on 2mb at the mo soon to be increased to 4mb.
I heard some crazy stories about the Koreans getting 100mb but that seems a bit far fetched.
This is a good test to check your speed.

5mbs down / 374kbs up - Time Warner cable

The download speed is more than enough for me, but I would love to have more upload.

If you're in the US, this is my favorite test:

That test gave me about 200kb/sec down and 20kb/sec up. Thats about what i thought it was. You never get anywhere near the quoted speed.
I'm on NTL cable.

Its because all our telephone exchanges are archaic relics. Quite a lot of them can't even do the newer 10mb services.
I'm so jealous of you all.

My service is theorectically 24m/bit down, but is more like 15-17m/bit in reality.

kb/sec and kbps are the same. kb/sec and kB/sec are different.

kb = kilobits
kB = kilobytes

There are 8 bits in a byte.

This is helpful:
http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/

So a transfer rate of 2Mb/sec = 2048kb/sec or around 256 kB/sec (transfer rate your broswer shows)

Bottom line:

kB/sec is what your browser shows you when you're actually downloading a file. Mb/sec or kb/sec are usually what broadband companies advertise, and the numbers sound bigger that way images/smilies/smile.gif

NTL and BT are doing major upgrades, in the range of 8000 exchanges, many people I know already have 10mbit and get full use of that speed.

(Swansea, Nottingham, Cardiff to name a few places)

here at work we have a 3 Mb/1.5 Mb connection, and a T1 for the phones. decent, not super fast, but decent.

@ home i have a 3 Mb/768 Kb DSL connection. Used to have a 30 Mb/5 Mb fiber connection from Verizon, until i moved. actually got 30 Mb/s too! My Mac OS updates would download at roughly 3.5 MB/s sustained. When i was in Uni, i would always use Apple's servers as the benchmark - they seem to have unlimited throughput-I could sustain about 8 MB/s from apple in Uni (dual-OC3 and multiple T3's)

they now have about a steady 400 Mb/s of data constantly flowing in and out (combined)!!!

Theoretically my transfer is 5mbit / 2mbit, but at the moment i'm getting 1mbit / 512kbit. Usually its around 3mbit / 1mbit. My cable company isn't terrific, but hopefully Verizon will finish running fiber in my area, and i'll hopefully be able to get Fios.
