Default Buffalo TeraStation

You think its worth it for 600 pounds?

OR do you know any alternatives with 1TB of space and gigabit link?

600 Pounds= $1200, no? If you have "skillz" i guess you could assemble a low-cost computer that would have the same function for a little less. 250gig drives are about US$100 each so that leaves plnety for the other stuff.

Yep. Small computer (which you can use as a file/email server and router with 2 Ghz and 512 MB RAM with a nice Raid card and 4 of the drives mentioned above) would be cheaper... As long as you got a place to put it (little chamber somewhere where it doesn't bother anyone with its noise....)

But having PC will mean either Windows or Linux. Windows slows down after few days and Linux I think has some compatibility issues with some protocols...

A friend of mine is running a file/download/email server with windows (various types, 2003 server, 2000 and xp) on a Duron 800 Mhz and he never had any problems with it. Last time I asked he didn't know when he had to restart the thing, it just runs...

Thats cool although I dont think it'll be cheaper. Here 250GB hard drive costs 90 pounds Then I need a gigabit card, thats around 15 Pounds, then the case, CPU motherboard with 4 sata connectors, memory and PSU. nows lets sup it up:

HDD 90 x 4 = 360
Motherboard 60 x 1 = 60
CPU 100 x 1 = 100
Memory 30 x 1 = 30
PSU = 30 x 1 = 30
Network card 15 x 1 = 15

595 pounds which is the same price but I'll still have to put it all together - time images/smilies/sad.gif

AFAIK all buffalo network storage devices run a specialized version of linux. Linux can be a pain to configure, but there are ways to make it work.

You also don't need a high end motherboard or CPU, since all the machine will be doing is serving files, so a lower end athlon xp chip would be fine, no need for 64 bit in a file server.
